Trustpilot reviews are horrendous, but I am aware that people tend to take to the internet with bad news more often than good...

Are Bovis as bad as they sound? Looking at a development in The Cotswolds

Lots of new estates in my town and the Bovis ones always look tired with a couple of years and the houses definitely don’t look like a quality build though I can’t say exactly why, they just look cheap.

Thanks! Everything is ideal other than the fact that it’s Bovis - locations, schools etc - annoying

Bovis was one of the builders that I considered when I was looking around new builds. They were offering lots of extras included. However, I didn't go with them because they had bad press at the time.

Tbh from what I can tell, the bad press impacted them enough to make changes. They went from being a 4 star to 5 star builder. Maybe look here: www.hbf.co.uk/policy/policy-and-wider-work-program/customer-satisfaction-survey/latest-results/

Lots of builders hire contractors, so you probably have the same people working at different sites for different builders. The contractors go where the work is.

Some of the Bovis home layouts were odd as well. Worth double checking that kind of thing.

Any other builders you're considering?

Yes a small one - Duchy Homes. Their house is in a nearby but more expensive area - essentially we get a far smaller house for more money than the Bovis house. Both catchment to a great school which is our priority. Hard to choose

I live in a 1980s Bovis home, it is OK, no big horror stories.

TheAirbender · 23/07/2020 20:45

Thanks @SpeedofaSloth - seems like they took a dip in quality for some time, hoping they have permanently improved

Yes, they are as bad if not worse than the reviews on Trustpoilot! We bought our home from them around 18 months ago and have experienced horrendous building defects. It wouldn't be so bad but you have to fight tooth and nail to get stuff done that should have been done right in the first place, 18 months in and I can honestly say if I knew then what I do now I would not have bought the house. There have been hundreds of issues, here are just a few: our kitchen floor has been up for over a year as they didn't allow a drainage channel between the patio and the house which caused water to get in and ruin the flooring, we still do not have a date when this will be fixed! We have had to have all the mortar removed up to half height of the house as it was weak and crumbling, their contractors were not managed at all and they didn't follow basic HSE guidance on how this work should be done causing thousands of pounds worth of mess and damage, this was in Novemeber and we are still fighting to get this fixed. Our hot water tank was incorrectly wired so that it bypassed the thermostat causing the water to be constantly be above scalding temperatures 79c. They know this is an issue in all the other houses that were done at the same time and they have not warned the other residents. Our entire floor upstairs has been badly installed the boards miss the joists, the floor is floating in areas, hasn't been glued down in areas, has no fixings in other areas and has been improperly installed, today we found out our stairs also has not been installed correctly, all our shower trays were bodged in rather than fitted... the list goes on. Unless you want months and months of heart ache, watching your property destroyed by contractors that do not follow procedures - stay clear!

So do I.

We love our home, we've had no problems either and no horror stories.

Hi, we are about to buy a bovis home and only just looked at the reviews on trustpilot which are really awful (not even 2) compared to others which are 4+. Bovis only has a couple of hundred reviews and others have thousands. When I read the others bad reviews they’re actually all similar to the bad bovis ones. We are now really nervous to buy our house and we were so so excited, due to exchange and move in before Christmas. Does anyone have any experience of Bovis they can share please? Thanks

SilenzioBruno · 21/11/2021 17:26

We had a bovis home built in 2013/14. It was fine on the whole- there were ‘snags’, eg boiler leaking on the day we moved in, but they were fixed and it was ok in the end- even though I was raging at the time. I’m guessing you’re in rented or with family at the moment if you’re buying a new build so I’d just say don’t plan to move on the day you get the keys, plan instead to have a thorough day or two testing and checking everything and making a list. Run a full bath and let it drain, try out the immersion heater if there is one, open and close the windows and doors a lot. Check to see if the extractor hood has the filters installed correctly. Use all the sockets. Make friends with your neighbours- bond over snagging lists so you know to check stuff that’s been a problem for them. At least bovis will come and set it right, and it shouldn’t be a magical mystery hunt to find the issue like in some older properties.

I bought my new build Bovis house in 2002.Still here, love the layout and how warm and light it is.

I made the mistake of not employing someone to do a snagging list, would definitely do this if I was ever to buy a new home again.

Darl1111 · 21/11/2021 17:47

@SilenzioBruno @480Widdio Thank you so much for your comments they have really reassured me. I also went to the estate today and asked a couple of people living there of their experience and it was totally fine, said bovis were quick to sort any snags etc. so with that and your comments we are feeling a lot more positive.

SilenzioBruno · 21/11/2021 18:34

That’s great @Darl1111 I hope you enjoy your new home :)
