Utility room

Our utility room is also a boot room, dumping ground and pet living space. It isn't that big and mostly our main route into the house (external door and then internal door into the kitchen). I think a ceiling airer would really help, we had one in our old house. What floor-ceiling height do I need to avoid people walking through hanging damp clothes?! The room is square but the doors are on the west and south walls if that makes sense with sink and units on the north and east walls. Thanks

Don’t have one

Are you asking if you should raise the ceiling height? Surely you know whether you have enough room for an airer?

It's not that hard to work out. People are up to 6' something high. Clothes hang down a couple of feet, add a foot or so for the hanger. 10 foot high ceiling required?

We’ve got one and our utility ceiling ranges between 10-14ft (sloping roof) and I barely use it tbh as I still have to duck under soggy clothes then getting them down is a pain because there’s usually something large in the way (pram, boxes, kids toys etc).

I now only use it to throw the kids outdoor clothes if it’s been raining. Then I forget about them and the spiders from the velux window come down and wipe their willies on them so have to wash them.

So, in all, I wouldn’t bother!

Thanks everyone, our old one was in the bathroom over the bath and have no idea what the ceiling height was but Victorian house so v high. We can't raise the ceiling so I was after experiences of having one in a room that is walked through I suppose but probably didn't explain that very well due to being extremely sleep deprived at the moment.

Well if you hang it over the sink corner then you won't be walking through it, unless the room is tiny and the airer huge.
But it will presumably be in the way of the units? Could you have a washing line diagonally across the room instead?

Would an over door airer be better? Like this

We have one and it’s over the sink/drainer/side. It’s useful as it’s up out of the way. I use it to dry things that don’t go in the tumbler.
