Packers coming tomorrow!

It’s all been a bit hectic, this has been such a stressful time, and it’s not done yet. Due to complete on Friday, we haven’t exchanged yet!!
Packers are coming in tomorrow, we haven’t used a packing service before, what should we expect?
Thanks

Packers are amazing! They will come in and everything in your house will magically disappear into boxes in a matter of hours. Make sure you let them know anything that needs to be kept out - cleaning stuff, kettle, mugs, etc. I put it all in one place to make it easier. Anything you don't want them to see or you want to keep safe put in the boot of your car before they come. Good luck with the move!

Thanks, do I need to do anything?
Should the house be super tidy?
What will they do with food?!

They start in one place and pack everything. Your passports on the bookcase? In with your books. I've had a bag of rubbish packed before... (Luckily not a nappy bin lime a friend). There's no sorting.

If it's tidier you are more likely to get things in the right place at the other end.

(Just an observation from watching neighbours over last couple of days... Crews appear to be reduced to two. I've had up to 7 previously!)

Food.. I've always packed myself. They won't touch anything in the fridge/freezer. They expect it to be defrosted before moving (and things like washing machine unplumbed and drained)

noitsachicken · 22/07/2020 08:03

Thanks, fridge and washing machine both staying, I will empty today.

Find a box or suitcase, and pack anything you will need or dont want the packers to be in charge of - paperwork, the things you will want as soon as you arrive in the new house, whatever you will need the evening after they have packed and put somewhere safe (the car if you have one but keep the car key safe).
Then let them go for it. It is amazing to watch!

wellingtonsandwaffles · 22/07/2020 08:26

Our emptied our fridge and freezer last into boxes with ice packs.

They are great but be careful with any paper prints - that’s the only Thing that suffered in our last move.

efeslight · 22/07/2020 08:32

Yes, organise what you need not to be packed before they get there. We have also had a bag of rubbish packed and all my partner's trousers which meant he had to go to the local asda for more trousers in his pyjamas 😁

SabrinaThwaite · 22/07/2020 11:53

Label your rooms so they use the same labels on the boxes - easier for getting boxes into the right rooms at the other end.

Make sure you pack an overnight bag before they arrive and put it in the car. In fact, put anything you don’t want packed in the car.

We have only ever had a team of 2 or 3 for a 4/5 bed house, they are extremely efficient!

Howhighsthewaterpa6 · 22/07/2020 12:23

Used packers plenty over the years in the UK and overseas and they have been nothing but professional and very efficient.

Hope you have had a good clear out so your not taking 'stuff' to the new place, just more to sort out.

But my routine tends to be the same after having a good clear out, and it makes it easier to clean as you have done each draw etc.!

I always make sure I have important documents in one folder, passports, anything of value, jewellery and the like, always take them with me separate .

Pack a box with bedding/pillows, towels, soap/toilet bag etc and either have that packed in your car or the guys pack that box last. This way as soon as you get to your new home and the beds are in the rooms you can make the beds up right away, I never leave it until later as you will be tired and not having to hunt around for this kind of stuff saves a lot of frustration.

Another box I have has the important kettle/cups/tea/coffee/drinks/some cutlery and plates, just to see you through, I usually have the toaster to hand as well with a small amount of foodstuff, bread/milk and the like, as well as toilet roll and some wipes/cleaner, again I take this with me.

I usually if moving in the UK have a change of clothes for everyone inc shoes and nightwear, unpacking clothes can be a right chore, in the car, packing cube in a suitcase are great for this.

I always make sure I empty the bins and always have a rubbish sack at the door so its easy to just pop things into. Tell the guys its a rubbish bag though or label it.

Other than that just let them get on with their job, they will go from room to room packing everything and listing on a sheet then marking each box for which room it belongs, anything specific you want them to do tell them, save any confusion and if anythings staying either mark it with a post it or walk through each room (which would normally happen) and explain if anythings to stay.

Just try and stay calm!

Apart from the kettle, mugs etc I put everything I didn't want packing in the car (including cleaning stuff) then once they'd left I rushed round cleaning. It also meant that I had the kettle etc to hand when I arrived at the new house.

noitsachicken · 22/07/2020 17:34

Thanks everyone!
Still not exchanged 😬😬
But I think we’re all ready for tomorrow and just have to hope it all happens!

We were supposed to move today but it's been delayed a week. We've packed the house ourselves to save some cash and frankly I'm a bit of a control freak anyway! I'd be interested in an unpacking service!

noitsachicken · 22/07/2020 19:41

Oh no! Hope it goes ahead soon!

Good luck for today, sure all will go well!

Florean, an unpacking service has been part of a few moves, but I preferred just for the removers to put boxes etc in the rooms then unpack myself, nothing worse than things here there and everywhere not knowing where items are, better to do it one box at a time otherwise I would be standing over the guys all the time telling them where to put things

And it saves the mess of all the packing materiel all over the place!
