We bought a holiday let last year, it is an apartment in an old house right on the shores of Lake Windermere.

It’s very small and cosy with Great Lake views - I’m giving these details for name inspo!

We named it not realising there was a property with the same name very close by. The other properly is unofficially named hence we didn’t find it on searches etc but it does have a sign up. Ours is a bit tricky to find, down a long driveway etc so on two occasions now the linen has been delivered to the other property. We haven’t had any trouble with guests going to the wrong place but I do worry about that happening, especially late at night and annoying the other owners. They are quite keen for us to change ours.

We would like something that possibly reflects its cosy aspect and views but original if possible. We were thinking of something like The Nook or The Hideaway but I’m not sure if they’re a bit twee. There are also other properties in the lakes by those names. It will probably be hard to find something totally original in which case we would just be listed on the agents website as something like The Nook, Windermere.

Any ideas?

I quite like something simple and descriptive like as pp suggested 'the shore house'.
I agree that 'nook' or 'hideaway' sounds twee.

What fell do you look out onto ? Maybe something like Fairfield view ?

SunnyUpNorth · 16/07/2020 09:10

Thanks for the suggestions!

The apartment next to ours is called Calm Waters so I probably wouldn’t go too similar. I like things that are one or two words eg The Something.

I do like things with Shore in it, I’d been thinking of that. The only thing putting me off something with the word View in it is that we have great views so in the description there is lots of chat about the view. I thought it might sound clunky if it said they views from Lake View....’

I like The Shores. I’ll check if there are many more around....

What about The House on the Shore?

I've got a friend who has The House on the Beach and it is logical, makes sense, and is easy to remember.

Katinthedoghouse · 16/07/2020 09:24

I’d look on the old maps of the area ( easily found on national libraries of Scotland ) to see if there was anything historically you could use and add shore / bay / edge to it.

I agree view might be too clunky if you Use that too much

We stayed at one called The Cottage once and it was an absolute PITA to look up on t'internet. When one of your words is "the", I think words like Nook or Shores are a bit too generic.

SunnyUpNorth · 16/07/2020 10:20

I suggested The Nest to DH earlier, it’s quite cute. I don’t want anything too long, one or two words I think.

I think there are quite a few in the lakes along the lines of Ramblers Rest etc
I don’t really feel I can use Something Cottage’ as it’s an apartment not a cottage so that rules a few things out.

I’m probably over thinking as usual. I didn’t really like the original name at first but it suited it and now I really like it and think it’s perfect for it. So annoying we have to change it!!

Not sure if I'm telling you something you already know hence the suggestion but a "nook" is referenced in one of the first lines about Windermere in one of Wordsworth's poems. The poem is about maintaining the beauty of the Lakes by not building (shock horror!) a railway line..."Is then no nook of English ground secure". Hopefully without sounding too much like my 17 year old A Level English student days I think it could work well because you've secured that nook and view and beauty.

The Hideout? Is it too thriller movie?

Hideaway?

I guess that "Swallow's Nest" has been taken ...

Loveinatimeofcovid · 16/07/2020 10:28

Have you considered something really out there? It would make it easier to find and also more interesting as a listing on Airbnb/whatever site you use.
