How much for a cleaner

Alwaysinaspin5 · 15/07/2020 13:35

We have had the same cleaner for a year or so, when initially contacted her she quoted £10 per hour but this was increased to £13 per hour pretty quickly. She has text me last week to say her prices from this week are £15 per hour. We are in the North East. How much is reasonable for a cleaner? As I was happy with £10-£13 but £15 is a 15% increase. She says it’s because a lot of her clients haven’t come back after COVID but don’t see why I should be paying for this. TIA

Mine (nw) is £12ph which honestly is a steal.

I wouldn’t be quibbling over a few £££, but maybe that’s because I only have her for a couple of hours a fortnight and because I do NOT want to clean myself so she’s worth it.

If I needed more hours or didn’t mind cleaning I guess it might be more of an issue.

QueenCT · 15/07/2020 13:44

I'm in the NW and pay £16ph but that's for 2 cleaners for the hour

cattasaurus · 15/07/2020 14:33

Considering minimum wage is £8.72 an hour @QueenCT doesn't that mean you are paying below minimum wage?

QueenCT · 15/07/2020 15:06

@cattasaurus no as they count each cleaner as working 30 mins each I think. It's a company I use, not an individual so I just pay what they ask
A 2hr clean with 2 of them is £32

drinkingwineoutofamug · 15/07/2020 15:11

£10 ph here. NW. it's my daughter, she offered that as a going rate. Lost her job due to covid so I'm giving her something to do and I hate cleaning

Gunpowder · 15/07/2020 15:12

Mine is £12. I love her so much.

If you think you can get someone else good I think it’s perfectly fine to say it’s too much money and you will have to let her go OP.

Guardsman18 · 15/07/2020 15:15

Are you sure that's right QueenCT? My maths is dreadful though!

Darkestseasonofall · 15/07/2020 15:16

I don't think I'd happily give a 50% pay rise in just over a year unless she is a truly amazing cleaner. It's more the CFery of frequent price hikes than the actual pay.

ivfdreaming · 15/07/2020 15:18

£15/hr minimum 2 hour clean which was the shortest I could find - most wanted 3 hours minimum which for a small 3bed semi is ridiculous

caringcarer · 15/07/2020 15:19

I just had to get new cleaner as my old cleaner is afraid to go out after lockdown ended. She was not in sheltering group but just scared. I advertised for new cleaner and one started on Tuesday. She asked for £10ph. That is what last one charged. I have 4 hours a week and that is pretty standard where I live.

QueenCT · 15/07/2020 15:22

@Guardsman18 mine too - it's the owner of the company and another woman that comes. I just pay as they ask which is £16ph or £32 for 2...

caringcarer · 15/07/2020 15:22

I received 28 replies to advert though. It was only posted for 3 days.

I pay our cleaner £15 an hour. She started working for us about 3 years ago, and her rate then was £12 an hour. We've put her money up every year as she's so lovely and efficient and I really hate hoovering! So I don't know what she charges new clients but I'm guessing it'll be around that £12-15 range.

HighlandPeach · 15/07/2020 19:34

I pay our cleaner £12 an hour, she’s reliable and trustworthy, good at ironing, but not very good at cleaning!! She needs to go at some point. I’d happily pay £15 an hour if I could find someone thorough

Chouxalacreme · 15/07/2020 19:46

Ours is £12.50 although not impressed with the cleaning so quietly asked around for a new one and was quoted £21 per hour ! no not London !

HeyHoLetsGoAgain · 15/07/2020 19:52

It's an extra 4 quid a week. Less than the price of a pint in a pub. If you are happy with her work, and don't want to go through the grief of finding a new cleaner, cough up.
Mine charges £25 for the job, it takes between 1.5 and 2 hours per week.

user1471453601 · 15/07/2020 20:01

I pay £12:50 an hour, North East But she's brilliant, and I decided to increase from the original £10 we had agreed.
id be really upset if she left, she's reliable, trustworthy and a fantastic, and quick cleaner. I played her throughout C19, because my family income remained the same, and I'd chosen for her not to come.

For me, a good, reliable cleaner is well worth what I pay

Gunpowder · 15/07/2020 20:43

Weirdly I think you can usually find cheaper cleaners in London than elsewhere. Must be something to do with the bigger population and that it’s easy to travel from area to area so there’s lots of competition.

Alwaysinaspin5 · 15/07/2020 21:09

Sounds like £15 an hour is on the high side but not unreasonable, she does 3 hours a week so it’s a £9 a week increase.

We have a 3 bed house but she doesn’t do the bedrooms. TBH she is on the slow side, but reliable and have had a few iffy cleaners in the past. It’s hard, I know she is struggling but I’m also self employed and my income has dropped, but I haven’t increased my costs to my other clients to compensate.

Will see how it goes, I do love having a clean house but it is starting to be quite an expensive luxury.

Lived in SE until last year. £11/hr. Moved to southwest 12 months ago. Failed to find cleaner via word of mouth and am paying £18.50/hr for an agency cleaner 😳

But they're not working half an hour. They're working an hour. Then the company takes a cut. I hate to think what they're actually getting in their pocket for an hour of their time.
