Upstairs laundry room

We have an airing cupboard on our first floor landing which is big enough to house a washing machine and tumble dryer (it's where the boiler is) and I am wondering if this is a good idea. Does anyone have an upstairs laundry room? Does it work well for you?

Currently our washing machine and tumble dryer are in the kitchen but they would not take much moving (husband can plumb them in upstairs and has already checked this is possible!)

Do it do it do it!!!!

I had an upstairs laundry room and LOVED it. It makes so much sense - nearly all your laundry lives upstairs (in a standard house), and it makes no sense to drag it downstairs to sort out just to drag it all back upstairs again!

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/07/2020 13:15

Do you hang washing outside to dry? That's the only reason I can think of to keep the washing machine downstairs.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/07/2020 13:15

It is so much more convenient. Definitely do it.

okiedokieme · 15/07/2020 13:16

It's what I want!

TreaterAnita · 15/07/2020 13:16

We have ours in a cupboard in the bathroom with the boiler. Frees up loads of space in the kitchen and means the whole laundry process stays on one floor. Would definitely recommend.

We don't have the space outside unfortunately so everything is either tumble dried or folded
To dry in the airing cupboard.

Thank you for the positive feedback, I'm also excited for the space it will free up in the kitchen!

I'm baffled as to why we don't have upstairs laundry rooms in this country. So much more convenient.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/07/2020 13:19

This is my dream.

Do it.

achangeisasgoodas · 15/07/2020 13:20

I know it does seem strange to spend so much time carrying laundry up and down the stairs to wash it!

I grew up in a house with an upstairs laundry. We had a balcony off it that held a washing line but even without I think I'd prefer upstairs.

For us the laundry split is currently about 60/40 upstairs/downstairs with 4/6 bedrooms being up stairs.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/07/2020 13:30

I'd love this.

wowfudge · 15/07/2020 13:30

My only concern would be whether the noise from the washing machine would reverberate round the house more from upstairs and whether it would potentially disturb anyone's sleep.

reallifegetsintheway2 · 15/07/2020 13:33

Friend has one - in kitchen below when washing machine spins it sounds like a helicopter landing above your head! Check out proper sound proofing first!

Acornacorn · 15/07/2020 13:43

We did it and it was my favourite room in the house!! So much more convenient!! Rubber matting underneath the appliances and extra insulation meant we never heard them elsewhere in the house.

Poppyismyfavourite · 15/07/2020 13:44

Ooh no sorry. When we moved into this house it had the washing machne in the airing cupboard on the landing. It was such a pain. I dry most washing outside so was constantly carrying stuff up and down. Now we have it in the utility room right next to the back door and it's loads better.

starsinyourpies · 15/07/2020 13:45

I am planning this in our renovation and really excited for it! (So sad).

user327253 · 15/07/2020 13:46

I'm looking to buy a house at the moment and the first thing I check on the plans is if I can find space to make a laundry room upstairs. It baffles me how all the new builds have en suites but not laundry rooms. It makes so much sense to have a washing machine next to bedrooms.

achangeisasgoodas · 15/07/2020 13:51

Thank you for all the replies, we will definitely look into sound proofing, rubber mats sounds like a good idea.

I think I know what our project this weekend is going to be!

Ours is upstairs, built in to our bathroom. It's brilliant! We don't have any outdoor space to hang stuff anway so it makes total sense for us

Anothernamebitesthedust · 15/07/2020 14:03

I looked at a house that had this and it put me off - in the end we didn’t go for it but we’d have ripped it straight out had we bought it. My experience of washing machines on non-solid floors (as in joists and floorboards) is that It is incredibly noisy. I’d hate to feel like the floor was coming in on me!

That said, I agree it’s rubbish having it in the kitchen - space and noise. (Can you tell I hate noise?!)

fizzandchips · 15/07/2020 14:16

In a conventional house the only laundry not generated downstairs is tea towels and dish cloths, otherwise everything else is upstairs. I have never understood why utility rooms aren’t upstairs. On those days it’s dry to hang out washing you still aren’t carrying the laundry basket more. For all other times you are saving yourself carrying the laundry up and down the stairs.

dramalamma · 15/07/2020 14:22

We're doing this in our renovation when we finally get started. I had it before and it makes so much more sense than the horrible cold and damp utility that we currently have - def look at sound proofing (and quieter machines when you're next replacing) - I'm so excited to get it all organised - sad but true.

It's so exciting getting stuff sorted isn't it!? I'm already convincing myself I need a whole new set of storage tubs to help complete the airing cupboard to laundry room transformation.

Do it!

I would love to have the utility upstairs. We have family in the Netherlands and they all seem to have the utility room or area upstairs - it makes so much sense.

ProperVexed · 15/07/2020 14:42

I think this is a fabulous idea. However, washing machines can break down and can flood the room they are in. This would be unfortunate upstairs! I once saw an arrangement where the machine was placed in something like a shower tray so that any leakage was easily contained. Might be worth considering.
