Living/Working near Carlisle?

Hi, We live in Devon and I popped a thread on here a while ago asking about places to live near worcester...I've just stumbled across some beautiful properties in and around Carlisle (just amazed at what you can get for your money!) I think I'd be more inclined to live in a surrounding village. Can anyone tell me what jobs are like up there? Are electricians in demand? Are there many college teaching jobs available? Or is it easy/hard to find work in general (I'm happy to do almost anything to get us going).

Any advice/info anyone can provide would be hugely appreciated. The move won't be for a couple of years yet but want to try and have an idea of what we're aiming for =)

I only know this via a friend who moved from the South up there.
She used to send me cards of sheep and snow and said it was boring.
Her view was/is the South is much better and there is still a housing
problem up there as well I gather.
I thought it was lovely up there and it is a popular visitors area

I am not sure why you would want to move from Devon to Carlisle. Properties are indeed very cheap, which reflects their resale value too. Be careful of flood areas. The best thing about Carlisle is the surrounding countryside and areas you can access. Village life would be fairly isolated. Brampton is a nice market town you could consider. Bear in mind life is not very diverse - quite inward looking. I am sure there are jobs although salaries will be lower than South. I would probably prefer Penrith - more community and Lakes on your doorstep - though property prices a bit higher.

"not sure why you'd want to move from Devon to Carlisle"...that's why I'm asking on here...to get opinions/advice! I've never stepped foot in the place but ther appears to be lots of lovely villages akin to down south but cheaper. And as for resale value...well yeah! We don't expect to buy a property then sell it for Devon prices!

Ideally we'd like a village location here but property prices prevent anything too substantial at this stage, plus personal reasons mean we would like to relocate and put a bit of distance between us and where we are now. We're considering everywhere...not just Carlisle. Will take a look at Penrith as that sounds lovely.

We may not end up too far afield but want to at least explore our options!

Some parts of Carlisle are, ahem, a bit rough. It's also cold and wet.

GreenTulips · 13/07/2020 20:28

Why not look at Wales?

Acidrain · 13/07/2020 20:34

I live nearby, not many jobs, 1 college, 1 University, beautiful countryside, lake district on your doorstep, crap transport links, crap people (not very open minded), crap options for entertainment, floods regularly (twice in 10 years) beautifull area surrounding, very peaceful life. Places to look nearby (within 30 miles) Cockermouth, Keswick. Villages on the outskirts, Scotby, Warwick Bridge, Cummersdale, Dalston.
Beautiful location, great pace of life, simple living and crappy weather and prospects.

lakeswimmer · 13/07/2020 20:40

I live in Cumbria (but not near Carlisle) and am surprised to hear the transport links described as crap. The towns in the east of the county (Kendal, Penrith and Carlisle) are all on the west coast mainline and M6. I think the transport links are good for an areas which is pretty rural.

Some other villages to check out Thursby, Bowness on Solway, Cotehill, Brough by Sands, Armathwaite, Caldbeck (my fav place), Wetheral, Newton Arlosh, Kirkbride.

Sorry my above pist was quite negative, i actually love where I live and grew up on a farm in a hamlet nearby.

If in Carlisle look at areas Stanwix, Lowry Hill, New field, Sandsfield park.
Avoid Botcherby and Raffles area.

Dont move from Devon to Carlisle. You will regret it. Why do you think the Romans turned around when they got there?

Acidrain · 13/07/2020 20:45

Yeah you are right, you can get to London on a train between 3-4 hours, I'm just being slightly negative today!

Glendaruel · 13/07/2020 20:55

Love it up in Cumbria, people friendly, got m6 and train from penrith/ Carlisle can take you up to Edinburgh and Glasgow or to London. Don't understand how I can get bored, different walk for each day of week, lovely lakes, theatre by lake and Alhambra cinema in keswick, word by the water festival. I would look around the edge of lake district. Prices jump once you cross over the boundary but on the lead up you get fantastic countryside without it getting crowded with tourists. Although that's been less of a problem this year for some unknown reason!!!!

mentalbacon · 13/07/2020 22:28

Lots of mixed opinions then!!! @GreenTulips, I grew up in and just outside Wales! We're going to have to get a little list of places and do a few short holidays here and there to get a feel. Your replies have certainly knocked off my rose tinted glasses, however! Will also see what's about in and around the lake district. Thanks everyone 😊

Any thoughts on Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport?
