Should we move again? London to Bath (or who knows)

Apologies if this isn’t right place for this but looking for some honest and helpful advice.

I’m 30, DH 32 and lived in Bristol for 5 years before moving to London. I moved from Scotland straight after University for work and DH’s job was also in Bristol. First 18 months were good in Clifton. I didn’t really take to Bristol as a city as a whole, I loved life in Clifton and that was our bubble. (Note: people absolutely love Bristol, it’s a great city and I like a day visit but I found it too alternative/hipster for me to live in). We then moved to North Bristol to buy an ‘opportunity’ house, my husband had just gotten a job just outside London which he commuted for and I hated those 3.5 years in Bristol. I found the place rough, it was a new build estate near nothing, I’d come from a cute seaside town in Scotland with a lovely high street and bike rides on my doorstep and I was living in an estate near absolutely no parks/amenities/anything, couldn’t walk anywhere, had to drive everywhere including work/shops, our lovely detached new build was next door to social housing and we had an attempted break in within 4 months of being there and our direct neighbour getting an ASBO for constant arguments and fights outside. I was thoroughly miserable and on my own 80% of the time.

Given husbands job was in London (and he’d had a near miss of a serious accident on his commute home one night) I visited SW London, loved it and we sold up (made a lot of money on our 4 bed detached new build house) and bought a 3 bed garden flat in Putney. I adore SW London, the parks and feeling of green space, cafe culture, cute pubs, restaurants - it’s just an all round lovely area though traffic and parking are a nightmare.

Anyways, last year DH became unwell, was hospitalised and was left with post viral fatigue and has been off work for 7 months. Whilst he loves what we have here, he is ready for a little bit of a quieter pace (I.e no beeping horns on our street at 2am, not being able to get parked on the same street as our flat, noise of tube etc) but still with nice cafes and restaurants but main thing is he wants more space (DH grew up in a huge stunning period house with a walled garden so more space to me means something a little different to him!)

Husbands job has changed slightly in that he only needs to commute once a week, we used to visit Bath a lot and loved it. We have also considered other areas of SW London (Teddington, Richmond) but don’t know if it’s still too much for him. I would live there in a heartbeat. I don’t know if going back west is scaring me a little as I had a rubbish time there before. We aren’t village people, more large town people (probably aren’t big city people given we don’t leave SW London much) Also thought about Edinburgh but jobs for me there look thin. No children yet - I might not be able to have any so it’s not a guarantee we will but irrespective I do want to live in a lovely, family friendly, SAFE as houses area (I’m OCD on safety after an incident in Bristol which left me with anxiety). Not sure this is even important but DH is a little genteel if that’s the the right word?!

Does Bath sound like it could be right for us? Visited Marlow and Henley and liked them both but commute to London for me would probably be a pain. If we moved to Bath I’d work in Bath or Bristol. Also thought about Windsor too.

Looking for ideally a period detached house with a driveway, garden, minimum 4 beds in a really nice area where the people are friendly/sense of community and it’s easy to make friends. Budget is £1.4m. I really want to find somewhere I can settle and not move every 3-5 years! Help!

Also my house is up the hill so I can’t say I’ve had problems with air quality but lower down I agree it is worse. My road is a dead rand and residents permits and I’ve never had a problem parking but the m4, lark hall, Camden, London Road side of Bath is more difficult

Have you thought about Salisbury or Winchester?

I'd also be looking at the Dorset/Somerset borders with that budget-lovely villages around Sherborne/Bruton or down towards Fontmell Magna. Anywhere around the Blackmore Vale or Cranborne Chase really. It is more rural than you might be looking for mind you

@isthiswalter I didn't get the impression from the OP that was the type of house/area she wanted.

For a 'nice' 4 bed period property etc etc in a good area, I suspect you are looking more over £1.5m.

Agree that Bathwick hill has some lovely period properties as well. I wonder if poor OP was scared off and now won't come back.

Traffic is bad in Bath, I live outside but drive in for school everyday but if you leave early enough it is ok.

To be honest I would go to Hampshire with that budget. Bath is fine (I live in southwest), but some areas can get noisy and a bit rough. For a smaller more peaceful feel look at Bradford on Avon or maybe one of the Cotswold towns. But I aim to move away from Southwest at some point.

Personally I find Bath too touristy for a permanent move. And I grew up in rural tourist country where there were certain roads you couldn't drive on during school holidays (it was years before I realised most people's commute times go down during school holidays, mine doubled). I didn't find Bristol as you describe at all and maybe it's changed since you lived there. But then Clifton is a niche part of the city and new builds in the north (South Glos?) are again totally different, I'd probably suggest trying again in a different part of the city (Bedminster, Fishponds) but I'm not sure I can help because I've lived in both SW London and Bristol and my experiences of both are the opposite to yours. I supposed I'm not sure I can "get on your page" and advise. I'm definitely not alternative, fairly middle class, and also like getting outdoors.

I think I'm going to throw Doncaster and Cheltenham into the mix. Just aa alternatives to consider.

Cheltenham is a good suggestion.

I meant Dorchester not Doncaster! Too early, sorry.

Bedminster and Fishponds are 100% not for the OP based on everything she’s said!

Rainycloudday I think maybe my Bristol knowledge is completely outdated 🤣 or perhaps I'm more alternative than I knew. I really didn't like the 2 years I spent in Clifton. But enjoyed the few I spent south of the river.

Forgot to add on to my post that I moved to Bath from Wimbledon, so very close to where you are, and I found Bath to be the perfect transition from London.

Agree with all the posters about needing dedicated parking, parking was one of the reasons we moved just outside of Bath to Corsham.

Yes London road is horrendous, and as such I wouldn't recommend buying in Camden or Larkhall because of the rat run it becomes as a result. Parking in Bathwick is generally permit only, on street, and I think the same is for much of Widcombe. Bare Flat or Weston Village will give you more space in terms of parking and a garden, and that nice area feel, but you will lose the cafe culture on your doorstep as you'll need to travel into the centre of Bath (around a 20 minute walk for both).

I have no idea what property is like there but I loved Cambridge when I visited. It reminded me of Bath, but without the hills. Easy to get back into London too if I recall.

Ha! I just said what I said because the OP basically wants somewhere pretty upper middle class and tranquil. Bedminster and fishponds have a lot going for them but upper middle class and tranquil, with an abundance of detached homes, they are not!
@LadyMonicaBaddingham - Oxford seems very alternative to me. Massive homeless population. Hippies juggling and busking and unicycling in the streets. Pop up theatres and people who live on barges and indie cafes and of course hoardes of students. I love it, but it doesn't sound like what Op is after at all. Does it have a mainstream, genteel area too?
I’ve lived in Oxford for 10 years, close to the city centre, and don’t recognise your description at all. Except the students.

By too alternative, she means to many poor people. Not middle England enough.

By alternative I usually interpret (but obviously only my own opinion) as hippy/studenty, lots of wholefood/vegan/holistic therapy type places, not neccessarily linked to wealth demographic.

Cirencester - lovely lovely farming maker town, far cheaper then bath, safe, good schools, middle of the green cotswolds, trains from Kemble to London, good amenities, good leisure centre and shops, easy to get out of and into the countryside, easy to access Bristol, bath, Oxford, Swindon, Stratford upon Avon and so on.

How much would you like to spend on a house? Bath is expensive compared to Cirencester

Bath is so lovely, but crowded. Even so, I’d move there in a heartbeat if it was convenient.

Bath is lovely but very touristy and traffic can be bad.

How long have you been away from Bristol? It just keeps improving and is great for eating out now if that's your thing, so perhaps is worth another look.

Clifton is lovely but with your budget I'd look in Sneyd Park. Gorgeous leafy part of Bristol just north of the Downs so still close to Clifton but with bigger houses, bigger gardens and a more tranquil feel. Definitely not even slightly alternative or hipster Grin
