Cars keep hitting garden wall

Has anyone got any bright ideas for stopping cars hitting our garden wall? It’s about waist height so I think I need to put something in front of it that cars will hit first. But I don’t want it to be too ugly! The wheelie bin would work but just not nice to look at.

Why are they hitting it? Because that changes the advice. Are they clipping it when parking or missing a corner?

PerfidiousAlbion · 11/07/2020 12:18

Speak to the council about a safety barrier.

MamehaSan · 11/07/2020 12:26

This is one of those frustrating posts where the OP has failed to include crucial information that would completely change the advice provided Hmm

OP, why are cars hitting your wall? Are they travelling at speed or is it during low speed manoeuvres?

VettiyaIruken · 11/07/2020 12:27

I agree with pp, more detail is needed in order to advise helpfully.

Aswellaslocal · 11/07/2020 12:28

Our house is at the end of a cul de sac near the town centre so people drive down looking for a parking space, then don’t see the wall when they turn at the end. It’s never at speed but they are always dislodging the coping stone And taking chunks out of the bricks

Well, this is clearly a diagram thread!

Aswellaslocal · 11/07/2020 12:29

Sorry for not including that originally, does that help?

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 11/07/2020 12:32

We need a diagram OP!!

VettiyaIruken · 11/07/2020 12:32

It is, yes. Ta.

Big warning sign or hazard tape or reflective panels or something is probably your best bet.
I'm not sure there's a non ugly solution.

Sunnydayshereatlast · 11/07/2020 12:41

Jagged rocks...

Knittedfairies · 11/07/2020 12:45

A bollard.

mangocoveredlamb · 11/07/2020 13:17

Clearly the answer is a couple of penguin bollards no?

PigletJohn · 11/07/2020 14:31

it sounds to me like it is not tall enough for drivers to notice.

Is that right?

2155User · 11/07/2020 14:33

A house on my estate is very similar to this.
Constantly being driven into.
God knows how as it's so obvious it's a turning with a huge path in front so people clearly aren't paying attention.
No advice I'm afraid

grey12 · 11/07/2020 14:35

I remember reading a "prorevenge" story on reddit. This guy had troubles with a neighbour.

He put a boulder! Might be easier to get and place than a bollard

DianaT1969 · 11/07/2020 14:36

Make the wall taller?

AuntyPasta · 11/07/2020 14:42

Is the wall exactly on the boundary of your property? Is it pavement or road on the other side?

MinesAPintOfTea · 11/07/2020 15:11

Do you have planting space in front? Could you plant a couple of tall plants? Or put something on the wall? If not then it's definitely reflective strip time.

Does the wall taper at all?

patas · 11/07/2020 16:45

We need a picture or a diagram or something!

I can't imagine how people hit a brick wall which is on private property with their cars frequently Confused

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/07/2020 16:50

Honestly it sounds like there needs to be a hazard sign approaching the turn. Or to make the street resident parking only. Talk to your council about how to get them to investigate options.

Aswellaslocal · 11/07/2020 17:10

I’m just getting a picture sorted. I think it’s because it’s too low so when people are reversing they don’t see it. Has happened about 5 times in a year.

There's a fence in a car park near me that has a rumble strip of rubber on the floor in front of it so that when the tyre hits that, people stop rather than going on and hitting the fence.

JilzaFed · 04/09/2025 18:34

I have a low 30cm raised border at the front boundary of my property .I live in a narrow cul de sac so cars which go down the road often have to reverse back up and try to reverse turn in my narrow drive clipping the corner of my raised border.Im looking for a solution other than raising the border height .I do have high plants in the borders already

IsthatyouKateAdie · 05/09/2025 12:15

Do you own any ground between your wall and the road? We have a grass verge that was continually driven and parked on, and solved this with a row of 18" granite spheres that would be hit first and are heavy enough not to shift. They are quite decorative too.

outdooryone · 05/09/2025 12:53

I agree with making it more visible AND having some kind of wheel-bump or similar so that cars hit that first.
