My gravel driveway is slippery to drive on! Any advice please?

Our driveway is very sloped, and when we moved in it was a vast expanse of ugly tarmac.

We put mat grids down and pea gravel on top. Visitors are finding it difficult to drive on ( we do Air BnB) so I need a solution.

Has anyone solved this issue? Thanks.

Could you take most of the gravel off so the tyres come into contact with the mat grids more?

Can we have a photo so we can see what you mean?
Plus it would help in terms of working out what aesthetically would work?

Put slabs down where they tyres go?

Can you add a clear resin on top of your tarmac so the gravel is embedded in it? That will stop the gravel sliding around but keep the attractive look (our local park has done this).

What was wrong with the tarmac?

pea shingle is like marbles. Of course it will be slippy.

When it all runs down hill and you consider what to do next, I'd probably say a good tarmac on top of the old will look OK. A firm edging, such as paving bricks, will prevent it spreading, subsiding or cracking round the edges.

Resin Bonded gravel is very attractive IMO (gravel plus glue) and you can have it stuck to your old tarmac if it is reasonably flat and level.

We looked at putting gravel on our drive to smarten it up but decided not to - there's a good explanation on the link below re: why gravel over hard surfaces doesn't really work, unfortunately, even with the mats. As pp have said, bonded resin gravel seems to be the surface of choice now.

You need jaggy stones or gravel so they lock together. Anything smooth will just move around

The tarmac was very ugly, as the drive is very long and wide. It looked awful and is the whole of the front of the house.

I don't know how we would get the gravel out now. The grids are very thick- about 4 inches- and filled with the gravel. We clearly chose too small stones.

I wonder if putting something on top would work?

Who advised you to put down pea gravel!! It’s smooth and round! You need something much more angular, and of mixed sizes for driveways.

Could you clear/pave hard standing areas for tyre tracks ?
