Large bedroom or walk in wardrobe

Looking to do a loft conversion.

If you had the choice between a large bedroom with fitted wardrobes 23ft x 10ft or bedroom 15ft x 10ft with a separate walk in wardrobe which would you go for?

Is 10ft x 7.5ft a decent size for a walk in or would it just be too cramped? Ideally want it to have everything including dressing table.

Option 1 every day of the week! One large room with built in storage

Jenjenn · 03/07/2020 17:28

Option 2. It is really handy to have a dressing space separate from bedroom if one person needs to get up earlier. We use our spare bedroom as a dressing room and I would hate to be without this. For us it also means less clutter in the bedroom which I find more relaxing.

I'd keep the dressing table in the bedroom and have a smaller WIW.

BasinHaircut · 03/07/2020 17:36

Option 2 for me. We have a tiny 3rd bedroom (6x7ft) and use as a WIW and the bedroom has just the bed and a couple of other pieces of furniture that are more decorational than practical meaning you can have what you love rather than what makes the best use of space. I love that the sleeping space and dressing spaces are separate and enables the bedroom to be a much nicer place to be in. It’s always tidy and clean and calm and relaxing.

Sunisshining12 · 03/07/2020 20:35

I have a WIW and honestly it doesn’t have any more wardrobe space than our bedroom had before. In fact, it’s less! Corners & doorways eat into the space.

Draw a rough plan up and see how much storage you actually get vs fitted wardrobes.

Also, do you have an en-suite? If not, I’d say that is better

Smallgoon · 03/07/2020 20:38

Option 2... but then I'm a bit weird like that. I loathe ensuites for example. When I was viewing properties, a 2 bed flat with an ensuite just irritated me. Would much rather use the space as a walk in wardrobe/storage space.

Qwicky · 03/07/2020 20:39

I had this dilemma Grin I chose option 2 and I do not regret it. I love my dressing room so much.

I would go for a walk in wardrobe, I like the thought of a minimalist bedroom with all clothes visible and ordered in another room. I do have a lot clothes though.

magster007 · 03/07/2020 21:55

En-suite already factored in.

I have a lot of clothes too and like the idea of them just being away.

Was going to put dressing table in bedroom for natural light but the walk in will have a side dormer window. Will need to draw up a plan for each and compare.

I'm doing a similar size conversion soon and have opted for walk in wardrobe. It will be nice to have everything tucked away out of site.

minipie · 03/07/2020 22:26

We chose large bedroom with wardrobes over smaller bedroom and wiw. The walk in wardrobe we could fit in would have been quite narrow and windowless, not a particularly nice space to be in, so I knew I would never want to get dressed in there.

As a PP says we found we could actually get more storage in with normal wardrobes.

However if one of us was getting up very early I might choose differently.

Am I the only person who learned cm and metres in school and ft and inches mean nothing?

BobFleming · 03/07/2020 22:29

I have to convert to metres too.

Dressing room would be vastly preferable to me - plus it's becoming an expectation for master bedrooms along with an ensuite when you sell.

Lougle · 03/07/2020 22:31

I learned both, but my brain 'sees' feet and inches far more readily than metres and cm.

I'd do option 1.

dontdillydallytoolong · 03/07/2020 22:37

Option 2. It will still be a really nice sized bedroom.

EventRider1 · 03/07/2020 22:46

What about putting up a false wall and having the best of both worlds? Means the room still feels big but you get a walk in wardrobe aspect.
I have done this in my bedroom and love it.

What’s the room plan with doors, windows, radiators?
I think you can achieve both things. Similar to eventrider we built a false wall and have designated his and hers dressing areas behind it placed back to back as attached. Your dressing table would sit well in front of the wall?

Have you got ceiling height restrictions in the loft? If so, factor that into tye calculations, and look at floorspace with you can stand upright in also.

Personally, large room, no wiw. But then I have significantly less clothes than many, so it would be wasted space.
