To keep this internal door or replace? With pics! For tomorrow!

We’re currently completely renovating our 1950s house and have replaced all our internal doors with pretty big standard 4 panel doors. The door from hallway to the kitchen is a solid hardwood carved (with glass panes) number - was left by previous people. I’ve bought a 4 panel door with no glass to replace it tomorrow but having second thoughts. The existing door is a much better quality but just don’t know if it will look out of place to leave it. If left - would either paint white or varnish but would replace the glass to more modern smoked glass rather than this old 1970s style.

Do people like or hate this door?!?

Pedinally id keep it and paint it white and change the door handles to silver satin finished.

I'd get rid but replace with a glazed door to match the other new ones

@Bananasandorangesss if you like to keep the door, another option is to repurpose it, in that way you still have the door (a memorablia type to hold on to).

Here are some repurposing ideas, more on google.

Definitely ditch it.

20viona · 30/06/2020 08:26

Bin it

therealkittyfane · 30/06/2020 08:27

I would change it! It’s quite ugly and doesn’t go with your kitchen.
Don’t skip it though! Sell it.

LaughingDonkey · 30/06/2020 08:28

Personally, I would keep this door as it seems expensive and lets the light through, but would paint it.

If you will decide to get rid of it, then you might get good price for it selling on Gumtree or Ebay.

Plain doors were not totally typical of the 50s either unless they were a lovely rich wood. Mid century modern shows plain doors were used but in very modern houses. They were often seen with G plan furniture and teal dining tables.

Not necessarily in the average semi or urban detached. We had plain doors in 70s houses but my MILs 50s semi had the panelled doors typical of the era. Many had a square top section with three panels underneath. Lots of pictures available of these. Lots of doors at this time were also 4 square panels or variations of that.

Nope, as much as the it’s a nice looking door, it doesn’t suit your needs kitchen, it looks out of place. I wouldn’t ruin the door by painting it though, but either move somewhere else in the house or sell it.

Sooverthemill · 30/06/2020 10:11

It's hideous. Ditch it. You need light so go with your choice

mrsk247syd · 30/06/2020 11:11

Horrific- destroy and we shall never speak of it again

Bananasandorangesss · 30/06/2020 11:43

Thanks everyone - it’s coming out as we speak, I will sell it

@mrsk247syd this made me laugh 😂

I'd keep it but paint it white. The panels actually match the panels on the kitchen units in a way

If you sell it, please let us know how much you get for it!
