Bedroom flooring (holiday let). Your thoughts, please!

Someone managed to spill something horrendous on the carpet of a property I run as a holiday let. I had been going to get it professionally cleaned post lockdown, but have decided that it is now past its best anyway and should be replaced before guests start to return.

I had engineered oak boards installed last year in the hall, sitting room and kitchen, so it's only the bedrooms which are currently carpeted.

I'm wondering if I should continue the engineered oak (the same one is still available) into the bedroom/s - or whether people would find it unwelcoming and noisy in a holiday property.

Dust would not be an issue as it's comprehensively cleaned every few days during the peak lettings season, so it doesn't have time to accumulate. But people might still think it's a bit clinical.

What's your verdict?

I had wood floors put in bedrooms and regretted it. You do lose that cosy feeling. If you want would for ease then I’d put down some washable rugs as well

I would not put carpeting anywhere in a holiday let. All it will accomplish is giving you another headache to deal with. You can always put down an inexpensive rug if you think that will make it more homey.

As a guest, I would much prefer a hard floor throughout.

Carpets give me the heebie-jeebies in rentals. Thy might look clean...

Thanks, both. I have got another hol let with wood floors - but they were there when I bought it. The only complaint I ever had was from a guest who said they squeaked. I spent ages tramping around trying to get them to squeak, to no avail.

Someone got drunk and vomited all over the carpet in another hol let, though a carpet-cleaning chap did manage to get it out. However, you have reminded me of the headache...

Useful, Bob. Thank you.

I have three holiday lets and would only ever have solid floors - we allow dogs so only have rugs that can be easily cleaned or thrown out.

I did wonder a bit if some people might feel about carpets in bedrooms in the same way I feel about loo mats!

I totally agree with @BobFleming.

I hate carpeting anywhere, but especially in a holiday let. It's just disgusting to me. I always make sure there is no carpeting when I book one.

Hard floor and rugs which are easy to clean. I don’t like carpets in a holiday home

FlooredByDecisions · 28/06/2020 20:02

Thanks, Aletheia. I was slightly inclining towards solid flooring anyway, but then wondered what guests would think. I have carpet in the bedrooms of one of them, because the floors were too bad to expose (the rest of that house has original exposed floorboards). But that's the one that someone chose to throw up on...

We had wooden flooring throughout our holiday let and rugs in all bedrooms- which needed replacing rather often thanks to sick kids and drunk adults! Am going with wooden flooring throughout in the new holiday let for that same reason!

Wood floors with rugs

FlooredByDecisions · 28/06/2020 21:34

It's looking like wood, then!
