Tiling Fireplace Hearth

Has any hired somebody replace the tiles of the hearth of their fireplace only? how long did it take/ how much did it cost?

We have a brick fireplace with a woodburner installed, but the tiles are dated/ dark and look pretty ruined.

I considered doing it myself but i have never tiled anything before, and i honestly am not sure hoe to remove plate above woodburner with flue going through it, to then be able to remove the woodburner from fireplace.

O. M. G. Take a sledgehammer to it! We had a mantel surround made of 'garden wall' bricks but nowhere near as bad as that - it came out and left the chimney breast to start from.

sbplanet · 27/06/2020 23:05

Actually is it partially built into the bricks of the chimney breast?

You'll need a builder to put in a fireback and form a 'throat' for the fire in the chimney if you're wanting to keep an open fire.

LookingOptimistic · 27/06/2020 23:09

I quite like the painted brick and yes its built into the outside chimney breast, i quite literally want to just replace the little red/ burgandy tiles on the hearth floor.

Definately not looking to change the surround.

Could you try painting over the tiles with a heat resistant paint?

Gunpowder · 28/06/2020 04:11

We did this in our old house. Iirc it was about £200 and took a day/maybe only an afternoon.

DangerCake · 28/06/2020 05:21

We got quoted £385 for tiling a fire surround and a v small porch. Not inc tiles. We would have to get someone to move the woodburner and put it back for an additional cost.

LookingOptimistic · 28/06/2020 08:12

@Wingedharpy I was looking to replace with large stone tiles and not the little ones as they are harder to ckean, so not a fan of painting these ones.

@Gunpowder Oh that doesn't sound too bad,may just not bother with it myself then.

@DangerCake Oh ok, well our chimney sweep people will be coming back at some point to put in adaptor from flue to chimney breast lining or something, and replaceing firebricks - so maybe they can take it out for us and replace it.

@LookingOptimistic sorry, it wouldn't do if we all liked the same thing. I can see why you'd like it though.

Here's some tiles that are suitable for "Suitable for Multi-Fuel Stove Surround" They look kinda nice? :)

It also says "...we recommend using Palace Heat Resistant Adhesive."
in this section, which might give you some ideas.

Maybe you could get your sweep to take it out for a few days and then replace it after you've tiled. There's lots of youtube videos on tiling, I'd think the hardest bit would be cutting the tiles accurately. And I suppose you'll have to remove the old ones using a hammer and bolster?

@sbplanet Ah thank you for all the useful information _

That sounds like i good idea, i saw on youtube someone use an angle geinder to cut through existing grout then hammer and chissel to get tiles up so perhaos ik get chimney sweep ppl to do as you say and remove woodburner for few days.
