Carport with roof lantern

We currently have a small 50year old single garage with a parking space next to it. We plan to demolish the garage and we’ve been advised to get planning permission to replace it with a double garage before demolition - thinking of the future.
So we got an architect round but he said the site is too small (5m) for a good double garage and that a carport with a roof lantern could meet our current need (for flexibility) and future needs.
Has anyone chosen a carport instead of a garage? Was it better?
Any experiences with roof lanterns would be appreciated too, especially on carports.
Thank you

Find a different architect?

You want a garage, you pay them to draw up plans for a garage not a carport and submit them.

But I’m actually quite excited about the idea!

Ah, OK, I just assumed that as you'd prefer to keep to a replacement garage.

Yes sorry ginger! I’m quite intrigued by the idea. But hadn’t thought of it before so wanted to check it out here

Why would you want a lantern for a carport or garage? Seems an unnecessary expense. What do you mean by future needs? If you are eventually thinking of making it habitable a carport is not solid enough. I don't understand what you are trying to achieve.

Hi thanks for Replying. We might end up doing something as simple as just to demolish the garage then half the garage space would be a shed for the garden tools and the other half of the garage space for to garden furniture. at the moment we don’t have any garden furniture out in the garden as there is no space for it

We are not going to make it habitable. We have the “too much house not enough Garden” problem

A carport to me is just a roof on legs. I can only assume he's thinking something utterly different to require a roof lantern. Why not just put a polycarbonate transparent roof on? Can you give us any more detail?

I can definitely see the appeal of a single garage plus carport - garage for Stuff and carport is just the parking space with a roof to reduce scraping in winter. I would rather keep a car in a carport than a garage because it's a faff opening and closing the garage every single time you get the car in and out. But that is a matter of opinion. I wouldn't worry too much about a double garage being a bit small, because they don't normally get used for 2 cars these days anyway. Even a small double will comfortably fit one car with plenty of space for bikes and tools. But personally I would hate to get out of the car, unlock garage, drive car in, lock garage and do it all in reverse every time I used the car. If you do the garage, get an electric door.

We are having a carport done by this company
carports-canopies.com/carport-canopy/

We've seen several of the same type when we lived abroad, and they look very good and are sturdy. It's better to keep a car under a carport than put it into an unheated garage, as the car will just sweat and rust.

We are in a conservation area (Victorian) hence roof lantern. Although there are some awful outbuildings on the street there are nice ones too. I like the idea of light roof.

Are roof lanterns unnecessarily high end do you think?

Catsmother those carports do look very smart. Please come back and let me know how you get on once it’s been built

It should go up in about 6 weeks. We'd lived in Belgium and lots of houses have these. We have no room for a garage ( period house), so thought we'd have a car port.

The guy came down, surveyed the site, and sent us a video of how it would look. We asked for some adjustments, got another video, and plans, and once we'd pored over those, we gave it the go ahead. We had to pay for the survey, but that comes off the final cost, and pay a deposit.

Dh is very excited that his classic sports car will have somewhere to live.

Hmm, it might be a bit ridiculous for us as we have an elderly Toyota Corolla covered in scratches....

still, I suppose we're only really doing it so that we have permission to replace before we demolish.
