I'm interested to find out what others think of the new trend of fake wall panelling?
I have seen so many examples on Instagram recently to do this, especially in new builds.
Is it just me who thinks it looks awful and should only be done in houses that would usually have had this with the tall ceilings anyway.
I think it looks nice when done with half a wall, underneath a dado rail etc but when it's a full wall in a small new build, it's just too much don't you think.
(I have a new build by the way so have nothing against them at all).

It's modern version of stone cladding.

I’ve noticed this, I think it depends on the overall decor. I’ve seen some that look really good and others that look a bit out of place. The ones in the bedroom tend to look better imo regardless of property age. But yes seems to be a really big trend on Instagram renovation pages.

I don’t think it’s particularly ugly, just not in keeping with the property. So I’d look at it and this, this person doesn’t know what they want, is it a new build with clean lines or a period property. I feel like that with any fake old property additions in a brand new house though, it makes the house feel bitty and disjointed. Do it if you like it though Smile

Think*

I had to remove a load of fake wood panelling from my first house, the previous owners had done the entire living room with plank effect plywood and finished it with some sort of mahogany varnish, so the room felt incredibly small and dark. This was a small 1920s terrace - it turned out once we got the plywood off that underneath was all the wallpaper that had ever been put up since it was built, it was a fascinating look back though time as we peeled back the layers!
I think either a feature wall or to dado rail height is ok, and can look quite smart in a big enough room and the right colour. Otherwise it is overwhelming and will probably look really dated quite quickly.

It reminds me very much of the home built brickwork fireplaces that everyone had in 1981.

sbplanet · 27/06/2020 12:19

Haven't seen examples of which you speak, but I imagine the stuff you get now will be somewhat different to the fake brick wallpaper or stonecladding etc of the previous century?

princesconsuelabananahammock · 27/06/2020 22:16

@sbplanet like this is what I mean. Trying to make a new build have character Hmm

That's awful. It looks like the inside of a pre-fab! Shock

sbplanet · 27/06/2020 22:48

Surely it's like any other interior design feature, it has to be part of a good design. I quite like that 'fake' panelling but it depends how things are put together.

Crownduals · 27/06/2020 22:52

It’s the daydo rail of today.
Each to their own.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/06/2020 23:26

Isn’t it the equivalent of trying to turn an end of terrace into a country cottage with plastic beams and “inglenook” fire place

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/06/2020 23:26

Just because it is painted grey doesn’t mean it is fashionable

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/06/2020 23:36

I’m going to go against the grain and say I like the picture you posted.
However it’s something that could look very bad if not done well.

Misbeehived · 28/06/2020 01:08

Don’t like fake panelling in period properties either unless authentic eg Georgian. Just looks odd to me in almost every case.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 29/06/2020 10:14

Like I said, half wall under dado rail doesn't look too bad but the whole wall and always grey too 🤔
