Decking. Hard or Softwood?

Kintsugi16 · 27/06/2020 05:14

Hi All
I’m just after some advice and to get some opinions on which to go for. Hardwood is obviously more expensive but is it worth it?
Thanks in advance x

Softwood wont last

Hyperion100 · 27/06/2020 07:38

Hardwood or composite...but then you have to weigh up a paved patio at those prices.

I installed premium softwood decking 5 years ago, which I re oil every year and its already starting to split and eot in places.

We have plastic wood type decking and it’s brilliant
Looks like wood but it won’t rot ever not slippery and easy to Clean
We had wood previously lasted 12 years before it’s started to rot

Wood, outdoors, should be viewed as a temporary structure.

A wooden shed will last longer, because it has a rof, gutters and downpipe to take (most of) the rain away from the timber.

Really?

I think this is probably a few centuries old.

Composite all the way
Non slip

They do some awesome ones now

PigletJohn · 28/06/2020 00:39

@ VeniVidiWeeWee Likely oak, and you'll notice it is not lying flat on the ground for rain to fall on it.

The timbers in contact with the ground may have been repaired or replaced, sometimes with brickwork or stone stools.

Thanks all.
I was hoping you would turn up PigletJohn 😊

Composite may last longer but it’s a listed building so we have wooden window frames, doors and a fully walled garden so it wouldn’t really fit in.

Iy looks like hardwood is the way to go

If it’s listed is decking really the way to go? Mines listed and I wouldn’t, I put in a sandstone patio.

jackstini · 28/06/2020 12:59

We have hardwood, been down for about 8 years and still looks good

We have yellow balau and use yacht oil

I do see what you mean bluntness but there’s already decking in that area and it works well. The house is L-shaped and the decking area fills in the gap to make a rectangle. Does that make sense?
The door from the entrance hall and the french doors from the lounge both open up onto it so it is almost like an outside ‘room’ with walls to house on 2 sides, wall to neighbours on another and one open side with a step leading to the lawn.

We plan to put a patio further down the garden.

That’s very nice Jackstini 😊

We have wooden floorboards in both rooms that open up onto it and use the area a lot
