Plinth heating in kitchen

Hello all,

Can I have some opinions please? I am finally in the position to get a new kitchen after waiting YEARS!! My kitchen is a very small galley kitchen and it would make much better sense to have plinth heating but my kitchen fitter says they aren't very good??

I had plinth heating put in our new kitchen, total waste of time & money never, ever had it on! Don’t bother would be my advice.

@Roselilly - thank you for replying. Can I ask why - was it noisy or not effective or maybe both?

I had these in my old flat. Literally fan heaters. Expense to run and only good for using when you are in the kitchen. If I wanted heat I just put the oven on.

@TARSCOUT Oh dear - doesn't sound good! :-(

My mum has one and loves it. Hers is a combi one so runs when the heating is on and can be a fan heater to boost as needed.

We have two as there was no where to put a radiator when we reconfigured the kitchen. They work well, but the kitchen is never as warm as other rooms of the house.

I would recommend if you don’t have any other options. Ours are Myson brand and run off the heating system.

If its a small area how about electric underfloor heating as an alternative?

Honeywort · 26/06/2020 21:46

Oh, I am the odd one out - happy with the plinth heaters in our kitchen. Only use it very occasionally thought - cold winter mornings mostly. The rest if the time the kitchen is warm enough for me. But we don’t eat in kitchen The dining room is right next door to kitchen so the kitchen is just where we cook and I’m always pretty warm when I am doing that!

Well a few positive comments! @Canyousewcushions that is an idea but wouldn't it be a big expense?

You'd have to have a look at in terms of what your floor area is to work out costs for buying the system and running it.

The electric systems are pretty much flat so much easier to install than a wet system, where you need space for pipes. I think they do cost a bit more to run, but I guess your plinth heaters would also be electric and possibly also include fans so it might be comparable.

The other consideration is insulation- if you live in a house with no underfloor insulation, and the kitchen is on the ground floor, you'd also need to consider whether you can put something in, otherwise you'd be heating the ground which wouldn't be great....

It was just another idea to consider.

Thank you - I'll give that some thought x

I just never needed the heating on whilst in the kitchen, yes as PP said glorified fan heater.

thisstooshallpass · 28/06/2020 07:42

Instant heat, especially in a large space. Had one fitted in my old house. It worked well.

rosinavera · 28/06/2020 08:13

Ooooo thank you @thistooshallpass - that's encouraging!
