What have we unearthed behind the wallpaper?

We have took the wallpaper off the wall because we are redecorating and the paper was coming off the wall anyway. I have noticed these black spots on picture 1.

The wall feels dry but the paper smelt musty. Is there anything to worry about?

The chimneys did leak a few years before we bought the house and the old owner had to wait a long time for the neighbors to fix it.

I think we should repaper, but my husband thinks we can paint it with anti mould primer.

Wwyd?

That is mould. You do need to treat it with mould killer. The kind you spray and wipe off. Make sure windows open, mask on. Then your DH is right, don’t re paper, paint with anti-mould primer and then regular wall paint.

I have always used and found that Ronseals 3 in 1 mould killer for walls and ceilings really works. The mould does not come back.

You can get it at Homebase, B&Q, Amazon.

Just note, it is powerful stuff and not safe to inhale. You will want to have windows open a proper mask on and do the spraying in short stints. Like 1/4 of wall at a time. Otherwise, you’ll get a shocking headache. You spray, then wipe away the mould. Then let it dry and then can apply anti-mould primer/paint.

There are chlorine bleach based mould killer sprays but I’ve found those don’t kill the mould as well as this one and it grows back. Which doesn’t matter in a shower where you clean if often, but on a wall behind paint...not something you want to grow back.

Thanks. I tried to use some mould spray tonight but it didn't do much but I'll try the stuff you suggested....thanks again!
