varnish on a table?

we have a big oak veneer dining table that we use every day. Like a refectory table, it is old & weathered but very useful.

over 10 years of use, the original varnish started to come off. I got quotes to get it professionally revarnished, but that was more than the value of the table. So last summer, I carefully sanded the top with fine sandpaper and put on 7 coats of varnish

When I was done, it all looked great. But now just one year later, it is flaking and peeling and sticky and feels like it needs to be re-done.

So should I be using a different varnish? Or doing something else altogether?

What grade of sandpaper did you finish with? If it is too fine the varnish wont grip as well as with a harsher one.

I don't know about wood varnishes but for car paint I have read that you want to use 400 or 600 grit to get good adhesion.

I probably used the finest I could get.

Osmo Polyx oil is nice and durable for tables, there was a recent thread re worktops, I use it on all our tables as it never marks.
