Kitchen colour scheme & style?

Sunisshining12 · 24/06/2020 14:24

Still going round in circles on deciding on a kitchen. It’s a big space, 3m island & 2 wall runs. There’s a lot of natural light in the dining area but the kitchen area/corner can be dark.

House decor is taupe/browny greys/golds/champagnes. Some black furniture. Few blingy chandeliers. I guess you could say mild Dubai-esque. Floor is a coffee/dark wood herringbone. No grey or white.

What style kitchen would best suit this scheme? I was thinking a white marble or black marble effect worktop (Quartz). Black appliances. Matt, must have a handle. But what colour & style doors?

A plain slab doesn’t blow me away. Shaker feels too traditional? Then I discovered ‘framed slab’ doors but not in any colour other than grey, white or navy. (Magnet - Newbury, Howdens - Lewes, Benchmarx - Chelsea).

Ideally wanted to buy from DIY due to the wide colour range, price & reviews. I would even consider buying units from them & doors from elsewhere but don’t have a huge budget & not sure if this is a good idea.

The more I think about it, the more confused I am. Hoping someone can help out objectively! tia

Wickes also do an in-frame slab (Radley) but it’s one colour only - a pale grey. The only supplier I’ve seen with multiple colour options in this style is 1909, but I’m assuming it’s quite pricey!

Sunisshining12 · 24/06/2020 16:07

@MsShopper thanks. I think the Wickes Radley is the same as Benchmarx Chelsea - again only in Dove Grey :( Yes 1909 very much out of my price range!

Hopefully someone else will know of another reasonably priced supplier... If not, I may have to go for a plain slab or a shaker, but just don’t know which is best suited!

I think we need to start a in-frame slab petition with DIY Kitchens! 😄

Could you go dove grey doors with a light marble worktop (perhaps one with golden flecks in) and then have gold or copper handles, taps, lighting, accessories etc to tie in with the rest of the house?

Best example pic I could find, though on the more traditional end: images.app.goo.gl/xSaV3mGAabgyEqU67

Is your house decor likely to change over the next few years?
Is there clear separation between different areas, or do they run into each other?

The shift from browns to greys in fashion is designed to create this exact tension and get us spending more money.

A lot of whites are off white which may work for you. If you want more colour it may be easiest to paint the walls.

Is painting the doors an option for you? I diy’ed mine and I don’t recommend it but I’ve heard people talk about getting them sprayed professionally. No idea about the cost of that though.

Sunisshining12 · 24/06/2020 16:46

Yes - DIY should bring it back, they would sell lots!

I’m not going to be decorating for a long time as it’s only just been done & I like it. I don’t really like the blue-grey & white trend. I prefer taupes & browner undertones.

If I had an existing kitchen I would re-paint it but don’t fancy the cost & headache of painting brand new doors.

I don’t think dove grey will work at all sadly :(

Anyone?!

I thought taupey, even terracotta-ey, colours were making a comeback? I don’t know a great deal about kitchens but if I were you I would go white, with greige/taupe paint, accessories etc and white appliances maybe with ‘gold’ and wooden accents - gold taps and wooden handles perhaps? I think black will date fast. Stay away from cool/blue grey.

Barbararara · 24/06/2020 20:05

I love taupes and browns too - they’re much warmer than grey tones. I didn’t mean to suggest redecorating your entire house Grin but just that if you had it in mind to, you could think in terms of what look you’re moving towards overall. But you’re not so that’s not relevant.

Would plain wood/veneer be an option?

My neighbour has a black and white kitchen and it’s lovely. It’s a classic colour combination and easy to change up the style over time with new handles, etc.

Sooverthemill · 24/06/2020 20:09

You could look at cabinets they do in frame slab. We have decided to get cabinets from them. They seem to be good and they have lots of ideas on the website for colours etc

Sunisshining12 · 24/06/2020 20:16

@sooverthemill - sorry the link isn’t working, could you please tell me what it is?

What do you think about a pebble or cashmere colour? Sort of browny but not too brown? With a modern handle?

Problem is I still really really really want a framed slab style, but they just don’t exist in anything other than grey or white!

What are your thoughts on shaker? Not sure if it will match my decor? Decor isn’t mega blingy but it’s definitely ‘glam’ itms.

Really appreciate your replies!

Cashmere is a good choice, as it’s warmer than grey but still a neutral. We have it with a white quartz worktop and a solid oak floor and it looks great with those two colours.

There are also some great black and white statement granite worktops around which I wouldn’t discount either to go with the rest of the house.

MsShopper · 24/06/2020 21:01

Here’s a working link - really useful to see cabinet prices. I’m going to price up ours! 😁 They have a couple of warmer stock colours you might like. And they also offer bespoke colours. Great find, thanks Sooverthemill!

Sooverthemill · 24/06/2020 21:44

Sorry @Sunisshining12 I have no idea why not, it's Naked Kitchens

@MsShopper I'm going to place my order tomorrow! I'm super excited and the lovely young woman has spent about 2 weeks answering all my stupid questions and pricing and repricing to get in my budget. We are paying £350 all told for custom colour ( A farrow and ball colour) but she told me all the F&B colours that their selection is an almost replica for. Really hope it can happen ( I worry about another lockdown)

Getting handles from the Suffolk latch company

I found this company tonight which I reckon are similar but no price list online

Sooverthemill · 24/06/2020 21:45

@Sunisshining12 naked have a lovely seal pup white Color which might suit

242Mummy · 24/06/2020 22:23

@Sunisshining12 Love the sound of your house decor! We have a similar size kitchen; I have a 3.6m double-width island and a wall of cupboards. We bought our kitchen from kdcuk 5 years ago and I still love it. Have a look for some ideas:

Sunisshining12 · 25/06/2020 14:02

@Sooverthemill thank you for the link! I also like how transparent the pricing is. Hope your kitchen goes well, please keep us updated!

@242Mummy thank you, i’m not super trendy and into all the greys. Your island is huge wow. What worktop do you have for this size?

Silly question - but what colour is Cashmere in reality? It looks pinky/purple on some photos but may be computer?

We have a Corian worktop that goes over the top and down the short sides. It is quite large and took 3 men to carry into the house in 2 pieces; they then somehow put together without a seam (?)

Sunisshining12 · 25/06/2020 15:17

Ahh yes, I think Corian is the only way to go bigger than 3.2m without a join.

Just discovered this at B&Q. It is gorgeous. But you guessed it, only in white!

@sun if you absolutely love that B&Q one, get quotes for professional spray painting . Friends did that and it was amazing

Sunisshining12 · 25/06/2020 17:23

@Sooverthemill thanks, I did enquire about spray painting for some of the other ranges. But quote I had was ‘starting at £65 per door’ which then makes it quite pricey, considering it’s just a B&Q door 😩

OP posts:
Sunisshining12 · 25/06/2020 22:28

Okay. I’ve now stumbled across a sort of shaker but with a frame mould? Sort of like the B&Q one about but a bit more detail. Does this have a specific style name? I really like it. I know it’s traditional but think it could work in a cashmere with white marble tops & metallic handles. What do you think?

www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchens/bedale-cashmere/details/

Argh- just realised its a timber/grain finish from DIY. That would be too traditional then.
Wonder where I can find something like this but smooth Matt? Head frazzled!
