How to sand wooden worktops?

I'm happy to do some hard graft, but what do I need to sand some wooden kitchen worktops? And what should I then oil them with? Thanks!

I did mine for the first time in years last weekend- I have oak worktops. To be honest I was just using a metal pan scourer to lift a stubborn bit of food and it did such a good job I just carried on with the rest of the worktops and managed to get out all the old water marks etc. Go in straight lines though with the grain not round and round in circles like you would with a cleaning cloth

Not sure on the oil as I had some left over from the kitchen installer

I think mine need a proper sanding TBH, and even then it will only be a stopgap.

I sand mine by hand. As pp said, going in straight lines with the grain.
I swear by osmo top oil. Its a wax and oil mix. Works really well (you can buy it online) but don't let it drip on to sinks/hobs/ovens as it doesn't come off with ANYTHING. Use masking tape around all edges to prevent that.

I use a mouse type handheld sander.
180 grit papers

Doesn't take long. Wipe down when finished and then oil them with the osmo polyx

Thanks everyone, I'm going to buy a sander to help I think.
