Bathroom Door Lock and Shower Caddy

These are probably stupid questions but I’d like to add some locks on our bathroom doors but DH and I are useless at DIY and the door frames are awkward so I’m looking for advice on the types of locks we need.

  1. The door and frame are at right angles from each other, would a bolt with a hole drilled into the frame be the way to go?
  1. The frame is bevelled (?) so I’m not sure a bolt would work, would a hook and eye type one be ok or is there a better alternative?

(Please ignore the paintwork we need to redecorate!)

Ask what is a good height to put them? I don’t want DC1 (nearly 4 and 108cm) to be able to lock herself in bit equally she’ll want some privacy at some point in a few years.

Can anyone recommend a decent corner shower caddy with a tension fitting? I don’t want to drill into tiles but all the ones I’ve seen only have a couple of shallow shelves or look like they’ll rust easily.

Thanks!

I think I would use a hook and eye lock, but I am also useless at DIY so not sure if that is the best option out there! I'd probably put it at around 125(?)cm, so that around age 7 they can start locking the door. Any time before that and they can lock themselves in and panic when they can't undo it straight away. Until then, introduce a rule of door closed= occupied

Thanks for replying, the lock thing is not so much an issue for the bathroom since it’s only closed if it’s occupied but the downstairs toilet door is always closed since it’s in the hall and it makes guests uncomfortable. Also I’d like to pee on my own now and again!

I spent ages looking for shower caddy type thing for my new bathroom. I too didn't want the faff of something that was going to rust, dificult to clean or the clutter all over the shower floor.

I bought the showergem.co.uk/ and was a bit dubious but it is brilliantly simple. It glues on but can be removed without damage if necesary. It has held all our shower gel and shampoo bottles without coming off.

Ooh I like the look of that @PaolaNeri

It really is good, I moaned when I got it that it had some odd lines in the plastic (you can't see them up or with bottles on). They messaged straight back to say they were part of the manufacturing process but refunded me £8 as they wanted me to be completely happy.
Thinking of getting another set, as we have so much stuff between us all.

How long have you had it PaolaNeri? Our tiles are very matt so nothing I've tried sticks to them properly.

I had a stick on caddy from Lakeland which was £££ and looked promising for a while, but it came off in the middle of the night about three months later. Nearly shit myself.

What about one of these?
I had one in my old place. It fitted perfectly on the shower rail. Doesnt fit in new house shower tho.. Gutted.

Unfortunately we have an electric shower @MissPollyPops and there’s not enough space between the pole and the unit for that, thanks though. I’ve ordered the Showergem!

I see you have some kind of rim lock. Does it work?

How old is the house and door? Do you want a traditional style? Do you have mortice locks in other doors? Painted, chrome or brass door handles?

Is the door 35mm thick and solid wood?

The "bevelled" look in the "door frame" is just ornamental architrave, nailed onto the door lining which will be rectangular section.

You can fit a Tubular Mortice Bathroom Bolt which has a thumbturn on the inside and an emergency release on the outside. You need to use a drill competently to fit it. It has a snap action, not the wind-out action like the more common security rack bolts.

A great variety of knobs is available and can match the doorknob

Here we are. These yellow-cased Altro are good quality and solid. Can also be used on bedroom doors for romantic occasions.

We've gone for the shower gems in both our bathrooms. Love them! Easy to fit and more importantly easy to clean - unhook and whack in the dishwasher.

They are a bit pricey though!

@TheCraicDealer only had it up for about 2 weeks now, so not very long. You can message them on their website to ask if you are concerned, they will tell you if it is suitable for your tiles before you buy. One of the selling points is the special glue they use to stick, and that can also be removed.
