Wooden worktops in real homes

Hi, I've posted this in chat hoping to get more replies but didn't get one!

I was wondering if anyone Would share a picture of their solid oak worktop from DIY kitchens please? Or if anyone can tell me if they are of a decent quality?
My samples haven't turned up, I can't get to the showroom and am desperate to see the wood in real life before ordering.

Also, I'm going to use osmo oil but there is a few different ones and I'm not sure which one to get first? I want to make them as water repellent as possible too.

Would be grateful if anyone could advise

If the worktop is rotting around the sink, that is because you did not oil / seal ALL cut surfaces when it was fitted.

I painted every surface of mine - including the hole cut for the sink
three times
before the (stainless steel) sink was put in

12 years on its still solid and fungus free

We have oak worktops with a Belfast sink, they're 6 years old now and still in excellent condition. I have 2 dd's who constantly spill stuff and leave water standing but as they've been well oiled it just sits on the surface. The only stain I've had was from bleach but I just sanded it out and re oiled that area.

I think we bought ours from Worktop Express, our kitchen was from DIY kitchens but I can't remember why we didn't order the worktop from there. I oiled them 3 x on top and 2 x underneath with Osmo Clear Top Oil before they were fitted then extra around the tap and sink cut out. I've redone them twice since.

I'm surprised so many people have so much bother with oak worktops, we're definitely not careful with ours so I assume it comes down to the product used on them.

So many people saying osmo oil! And to think I'd never heard of it before so thanks everyone

@MrBennsshop thanks for the link. I found that exact sink for £409 plus £35 for the waste kit and am sorely tempted BUT I'd need a 100mm bigger cabinet and the double sink I had my eye on is only £199. I think I have to leave it. I will see!

I came on to start exactly the same thread. Glad I saw this one!

We will be getting a new kitchen, we currently have granite which is bonkers expensive but has required no upkeep at all and it's brilliant being able to take things out of the oven and put them straight onto the worktop.

Was hoping to get away with something a bit cheaper this time and wood is sooooo pretty!

Wood is lovely. Unfortunately ours warped very badly over the dishwasher-I think the fitter should have put some sort of damp membrane to protect it from the humidity generated by the dishwasher.
The odd scratch or ding didn’t matter, and bad marking can be sanded out. But we weren’t careful enough with it and it did look very tired and tatty.

We replaced it with quartz which was scary expensive but way more practical for us. However, for the cost of any stone-type worktop you could replace a wooden worktop a few times over!

Saz
My bamboo is 5cm thick and multiply cross laminated.
You could not warp it if you tried

It looks good from every angle (which is lucky because one piece is in upside down as I preferred the grain !)

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/06/2020 14:34

Rather than a wooden worktop I got a laminate one and then put on those clip on chopping boards/butchers boards from Ikea. Look amazing and can replace easily when knackered

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 23/06/2020 18:41

We have wooden worktops. They take indentations really easily. You can see DH's signature where he signed a document one day, straight onto it!

Rightmovenewbie · 23/06/2020 20:11

This is how we did the wooden worktop / corian round the sink.

Oh god, this is why we went for quartz. Beautiful and low maintenance 😩

££££ though - we paid less than £300 for 6m of wooden worktops, anything else other than laminate was out of our price range at the time.
