What flooring with grey cabinets in kitchen?

For those of you with light grey cabinets - what flooring did you go for?

Trying to finalise the flooring for my new home's kitchen. Attached is a kitchen visualiser for the cabinets (light grey) and the worktop has a copper slate effect (second image). Walls are white and would like the room to feel light and spacious.

Would it be a disaster to match the flooring to the worktop? I've seen copper slate tiles for flooring as an option. Link to site. Or will it get dated quickly or clash etc.?

Any other ideas for flooring with this specification?

I’ve got amtico satin weave. It’s a very dark charcoally grey with a slightly metallic finish. Looks fab with my cabinets which look a very similar colour to yours.

No pics, sorry as too revealing.

I looked again at your pictures your dark grey work top possibly changes things (mine is white with grey flecks/mirror fragment).

ChocoTrio · 18/06/2020 21:10

Thanks - I'll check out your link for satin weave.

I'm considering wood effects too. If there's anyone else who has had similar coloured cabinets and had wood look flooring too?

@ChocoTrio Why did I think you had purchased a new build...?

lockdowndreamer · 19/06/2020 02:05

Natural wood of some sort. Oak possibly? But the shade should be contrasted with the grey to make the cabinets stand out.
Definitely don't match the worktop and the flooring. Too heavy and will make the room very dark. Happy choosing Thanks

weepingwillow22 · 19/06/2020 07:40

I would go for a complete contrast. Maybe herringbone oak or similar to get some natural textures and warmth into the design.

Here is an example

Kitchen was here when we bought the house and our cabinets are darker but we have a grey wood effect karndean. Only been here a few months but it seems pretty easy to look after.

We moved into a house with a pale grey kitchen. The floor tiles are large, square, Matt, off white. I hate them as they show up everything - ever spec of dust, every hair (I have shoulder length hair) and every bit of dust that the dog brings in from the garden. I have to sweep it twice a day and wash it every two days (should be every day but that is too soul destroying).

Don’t go for plain pale tiles.

A friend of mine has pale beige tiles but they have a subtle swirly pattern to hide the kitchen horrors.

SHAR0N · 19/06/2020 08:30

I agree , NOT plain pale tiles.

I’d go for wood effect but I like a traditional style.

BTW your layout looks nice but will drive you crazy with all that walking, your sink, fridge and microwave are too far apart.

@Smallgoon - yeah I am in the process with a new build, but it's delayed by 2-3 months due to covid - lots of things still need doing though and I've got loads of lists, to-dos and checklists!

The builders are not including flooring, so I'm getting that myself - found a decent local floorer who seems good and given me loads of samples - but it's just not the same without being able to see the actual kitchen cabinets in the house atm. I could ask the builder to do flooring but their prices are really marked up (despite the fact they apparently pay no VAT on flooring either!).

That image is a kitchen visualiser (computer generated) of the one I'm getting to just give an idea of what the cabinets and worktop should look like. I need to confirm the flooring I want with the floorer in a few weeks so that they can ensure they have enough stock in time etc.

Ahh, ok. Can't believe they would charge so much VAT exempt! What kind of flooring are you going for? Engineered?

Kitchen looks great btw! Wish I had that much space.

Mascotte · 19/06/2020 09:55

I'd go wood effect I think. Warm and bright.

Look at the Bamboo Flooring Company - like actual wood but cheaper and more hard wearing. I had it through my previous house and was very pleased with it.

ChocoTrio · 19/06/2020 09:57

@weepingwillow22 - I really love the wood look flooring against those cabinets. Is that style called parquet?

The floorer offers engineered wood, LVT (Amtico/Karndean) and 'real' wood. Been advised that LVT is good if you don't want too much maintenance. A wood look LVT would be a good compromise.

OP posts:
SHAR0N · 19/06/2020 10:00

LVT are indeed low maintenance but they are VERY expensive so make sure you like it and it won’t date, because you will never change it.

ChocoTrio · 19/06/2020 10:03

@Smallgoon - tell me about it! It would be so much more convenient if the builder did the flooring, so I can just move in with everything ready to go!

The builders quote and set price they would not budge on was £3k more than what the local floorer quoted (who came by recommendation of someone else on the development). You pay for convenience with the builder I guess. Builders can get away with marked up flooring prices as it's more profit for them.

Supporting the local economy this way I guess - local floorer may need the business more so than the builder?!

Still going through the samples the floorer gave. So much choice! I like the idea of a wood look, but LVT (antic/karndean) for easier maintenance.

OP posts:
ChocoTrio · 19/06/2020 10:03

*Amtico not antic

@lockdowndreamer

"Definitely don't match the worktop and the flooring. Too heavy and will make the room very dark."

Thanks! Point taken.

I'll look through the oak LVT samples. I've seen some kitchens where they mix up the oak ranges and sizes. Looks a little eclectic but quite stylish - question is if it dates too quickly. blog.polyflorathome.com/2016/07/15/stunning-floors-worth-tweeting-about/

We have grey cupboards and wooden floor. V happy with it. We've had wood before and wouldn't choose anything else. Always warm on your feet amd quite forgiving.

@Playdoughcaterpillar

Love your units btw!

The flooring looks really good against the light grey. Did you get engineered or 'real' wood? Or did you go with an LVT karndean/Amtico type of wood look?

I thought that with 'real' or engineering wood the floor needs more maintenance. I assume you've been ok though?

OP posts:
Terryscombover · 19/06/2020 10:27

My experience of LVT isn't good. It was Kardean and Amitco and both scratched too easily for my liking. I'd go for engineered wood next time!

mummyshambles123 · 19/06/2020 10:27

I think you can't beat real or engineered wood for the feeling of it but LVT is so much easier to maintain and is waterproof.

If going for LVT I'd recommend Amtico over Karndean - the wear layer is thicker.

If you're near to a John Lewis, they stock Amtico, Karndean and Kahrs (real and engineered wood) and have samples in store.

mumulala · 19/06/2020 10:28

I've got a slightly darker grey cabinets in more traditional style, teak worktop. Floor is reclaimed wood effect tiles in herringbone pattern, which is blue/grey with flashes of brown. It works really well.
