Can I use kitchen &bathroom paint to seal new plaster under normal emulsion?

We are having our living and dining rooms stripped and skimmed with new plaster, and then redecorating ourselves. I have loads of white kitchen and bathroom paint. Can we use this (diluted) to seal the plaster before painting over it with normal coloured emulsion or will there be some sort of reaction between the two types of paint?

It probably isn't the best thing to use as a mist coat on new plaster, particularly if there is any moisture left in the new plaster at all. Bathroom paint is likely to have a high vinyl content to keep out moisture. If you use this as a mist coat on fresh plaster it will also have the outcome of keeping moisture in the wall. Which you don't want. Could cause paint to come away.

Better using a watered down contract emulsion for a mist coat.

K&B may be acrylic rather than vinyl.

It is more expensive and future coats of emulsion may not stick well to it.

To seal bare plaster, an ordinary matt white emuslsion from a reputable maker (not a "basic" or "value" brand) will be fine and is cheaper than colours.

on bare plaster or filler, apply one or two mist coats thinned with water.

If the plaster is new and drying out, use a non-vinyl matt such as Dulux Trade Supermatt which is porous and allows damp to escape. It is not very durable but you can paint over it with vinyl once the wall is dry.

Thanks. Good points about the plaster drying out properly. We'll go with the normal white emulsion watered down.
