DiY help please, curtain pole

One of my curtain poles is threatening to fall down. The top screw in one of the brackets has pulled out.

Please someone talk me through fixing it. Stbx looks pointedly it every time he's here, and I want to get it sorted without his assistance.

That's easy - kick him to the kerb lol

try finding a hollow wall anchor (it's a screw with a sleeve that pancakes as you screw into it) and this might do it.

He's well and truly kicked but likes to prowl the house when he comes to see the children. I will try that, thank you.

Is the wall plaster on brick/block, or is it plasterboard?

The fix depends.

Also, how long is the old screw and its plasplug?

Are you finding it difficult to drill into the lintel above the window opening?

It's brick, really old house. The old screws aren't long enough, that's obvious now it's down. I think they're 2inches long. If that. I've got a drill. Just don't want to make a complete hash of it.

I'd fill it with some polyfiller, squidge some in and flatten it off with a credit card or the like.

Then you'll need a real plug for walls.
Drill a hole to fit the plug and bang it in.

Use a nice long screw.

It's not hard you just need to take the plunge.

A 2 inch screw should be sufficient. What about the plasplugs? Are they loose?

Drill a hole deep enough and wide enough for your plasplug and screw to go right in. Remove dust and loose material with a vac or water jet.

obtain a rube of builders adhesive of the no-more-nails type (own brands are much cheaper).

Insert the nozzle deep into the hole and fill it from the back so there is no air bubble at the back.

If you do not have them, get a block of 35mm brown plasplugs. Short red or yellow ones are not good enough for a curtain pole. Press your plasplug in so it is encased in the adhesive and the top of the plug is slightly below the surface of the plaster (you can put a screw a turn or two into the plug to use as a handle). Wipe off any excess adhesive with a damp sponge. Leave it overnight to set.

The next day you can drive your screw home. The glue will prevent the plug from spinning in the hole, and will transmit the expansion to the brick without loosening or crumbling.

When you buy a block of plasplugs, the plastic rectangle they are moulded onto has the sizes or screw and drill embossed on it, with sample holes to fit.

Ah not 2inches at all, a smidge over 1 inch. It's a very long window, so the curtains are quite heavy.

Thank you @PigletJohn for your detailed advice!!
