Never painted a room - how do you do it?

I’d like to repaint our bathroom but I don’t know how, so sorry for the daft questions!

We have gloss paint on the door and doorframe, white paint on the ceiling with lights built in and pale green paint on the walls where there are 2 towel heaters / radiators.

What order do you paint things in and how do you get around the lights and around/behind the towel rails and still have even brush strokes?!

How do you stop it splattering everywhere?!

All tips will be gratefully received!

Google is your friend. Seriously. There are millions of articles and YouTube videos on how to prep, what to use, what other to do things in. I had to do some painting recently and googled it and watched videos.

For example if you Google 'painting behind towel radiator' - you get suggested brushes/rollers, you get articles on how to remove the radiator to paint, you also get articles on how to paint without bothering to remove the radiator first. There are some videos too.
If you can afford it I'd just hire someone tbh. I can't be arsed with the prep. I only do small stuff

I used this when painting my bedroom. They have other guided on ceilings etc.

Thanks both.

We usually get someone in to do this sort of stuff but I thought that I ought to have a go as we’ve got more free time than usual!

The only trouble I can anticipate is that, after having ignored it for the last 12 weeks (or whatever we’re on now), DH will suddenly want to get involved as soon as I make a start! That definitely won’t end well - he’s a complete perfectionist and while I don’t want to mess it up, I can see that my first ever effort might not be perfect (which is why I thought I’d start with the bathroom rather than the living room!).

You'll be fine op. It's only paint, how wrong can it go?! But I do think it's worth spending tune and effort on prep - washing and sanding the walls, loosening plug sockets, masking up. Makes such a difference to the end result. Maybe your DP can do that bit (which is the worst bit) and you can paint.

Start with the ceiling and work down, mask off/cover anything you don't want to paint and follow the advice of Bing Bunny when using a brush: dip, drip, wipe, paint Smile

Also, always clean your painting stuff as soon as you're done for the day - it'll last longer and the bristles/roller pile won't get gummed up.
