House overlooking a graveyard. Would you buy?

Looking at a house in a lovely village. It hasn’t sold and now seems to be v good value, although it needs a fair bit of work. The only reason we can see for it not selling is that it is almost on a graveyard.

The church is beautiful Grade 1 listed, the churchyard is very well looked after. There is a small path between the house and the graveyard, which goes to the front door of the house. The church is right across the other side of the churchyard, although obviously the bells will be loud on a Sunday morning, but we have lived close to church bells before and loved it.

We would like it be our forever home, but there is a small possibility that we will need to move at retirement and I don’t want to buy something that will be difficult to sell.

As my son said, the neighbours will be quiet!

I would, plenty wouldn’t.

EggbertHeartsTina · 11/06/2020 21:59

... I’d be more likely to buy it

FiveToFour · 11/06/2020 22:00

Yes,definitely .Our first house backed onto a graveyard and our route out to shops ran through it.
I still remember walking there on summer evenings with toddler DD Smile

PinkBuffalo · 11/06/2020 22:00

Absolutely! Always remember a friend years ago whose house backed onto a graveyard saying They were the best neighbours (I think because it was quiet and no one woke the kids up and kids could play in garden not worrying about noise Smile)

Teaandalemontart · 11/06/2020 22:01

I would but I see ghosts a lot and they don't worry me at all.

(Really)

Daisydoesnt · 11/06/2020 22:02

We did! Our last house, the garden was parallel to the church/ graveyard. We looked into the graveyard from our bedroom windows.

Very peaceful, no threat of the land being developed. Full of snowdrops in spring. Didn’t bother me in the least and I used to sleep there on my own very soundly.

My only question would be is the graveyard well tended, regularly mown etc? I couldn’t bear to overlook it if it was overgrown (but that goes for any neighbours). We didn’t have any problem at all selling the house.

I love cemeteries - something about the aesthetic blend of nature and gravestones is very beautiful.

Hyperion100 · 11/06/2020 22:04

As long as you don't get any groups of 'orrible teenagers hanging out there, go for it!

Obviously don't forget to hang sage over your doors, put a ring of salt around the house and have it blessed by a priest....you know...for the ghosts.

Daisydoesnt · 11/06/2020 22:04

OP I expect the house is slow to sell because it’s grade 1 listed. That WOULD put me off, especially if it needs lots doing to it!

AKissAndASmile · 11/06/2020 22:04

I wouldn't. Creepy.

intheningnangnong · 11/06/2020 22:04

My Grandad was a vicar, many happy hours spent playing by the graves.

KingOfDogShite · 11/06/2020 22:04

I’d love it :)

amusedtodeath1 · 11/06/2020 22:05

Sounds awesome, if you can handle it then go for it.

Imagine the Halloween parties you could have.

MeOldBamboo · 11/06/2020 22:05

Go for it! No problem with noisy neighbours!

tenlittlecygnets · 11/06/2020 22:06

I would! Perfect neighbours. And a nice place to walk.

DisobedientHamster · 11/06/2020 22:07

I would without hesitation.

LipstickLoves · 11/06/2020 22:07

I love cemeteries too, I would.

FatalSecrets · 11/06/2020 22:07

Would be a massive plus for me!

Longdistance · 11/06/2020 22:09

100% I would buy it. Quiet neighbours.

It’s a condition with buying our next house, that if it’s near a graveyard it’s a yes.

My DGM used to live by one. No issues.

Saz12 · 11/06/2020 22:09

Assuming it’s not a favourite drinking/shagging spot for local bored teens, and that it’s “full”, or nearly full, Id be delighted to!
If it was still in use, then I would buy anyway, personally.

Redshoeblueshoe · 11/06/2020 22:09

Sounds great

BillieEilish · 11/06/2020 22:09

I would absolutely LOVE that!

Wagsandclaws · 11/06/2020 22:12

We lived opposite a tiny graveyard and a tiny baptist church in a Devon village. It was lovely and not in the least bit creepy.

Used to walk down the high street tipsy back from the pub with all the street lights turned off for economy at ten Grin

AgeLikeWine · 11/06/2020 22:13

I’m sure it will be nice and quiet, OP, and you will almost forget the graveyard is there, until one night....
It’s close to midnight, Something evil’s lurking in the dark.
Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart.
You try to scream, but terror takes the sound before you make it.
You start to freeze, as horror looks you right between the eyes, you’re paralysed.... Grin.

Skyliner001 · 11/06/2020 22:14

Perfect, it won't be built on and the neighbours won't be noisy.
