What do u all think pls- the House next door sold & massive renovation going on with garage conversation etc. The side wall of the house is what demarcates both houses ( my house and the house under renovation) Now the builder came knocking to say they need access through my side gate into my garden so as to install a vent. I said ok but then I am thinking I should have asked them what type of vent etc. Do I have to say yes as the fumes from the house through the vent is going to come into my own garden/space 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️I have attached a few pictures to try and show the 2 houses

There are building control regs for that I believe.

user1497643032 · 11/06/2020 20:54

Just to add that the house under renovation is the one with the red bricks while mine is the one greyish brick.

@intheningnangnong thanks 🤔 I wonder if I need to contact the council to ask or how do I find out if it is allowed etc. I definitely wouldn't want a vent pumping fumes out of a boiler into my garden 🤦🏽‍♀️

I’d refuse access on the basis that you wish to investigate. It can be vented to the front, that what our neighbour did as their wall is on our boundary

superram · 11/06/2020 21:13

I would not allow this. What if you want to build up to the boundary of grow ivy or put up a screen-it would block the vent and cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

user1497643032 · 11/06/2020 21:14

@intheningnangnong thank you. I have so much going on now that I Dont even have the time to start investigating, thinking about it 🙄.

One of our neighbours did this when they extended up to the boundary. We didn't realise as they never accessed our garden. Our plumber has since told us it's illegal so I would definitely check it out.

user1497643032 · 11/06/2020 21:26

@superram exactly one of my biggest worries as I have had carbon monoxide poisoning b4 & in a coma for weeks on life support, was on a wheelchair, had to learn to do everything again- walk. talk, eat, etc it took me almost a decade to get my life on track (barely) it as left me with a lot of issues. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ wow it's all coming back now & I'm getting all getting me emotional & shaking 😭

We had a similar request from neighbours, it was to put a vent for a gas fire . It would have been about 60cm from the ground and stuck out from the wall about 10cm but eventually we said no, because with a narrow passage way there was every chance we would have knocked It, (and damaged ourselves, our property or their vent) plus it would have made getting through with bins or a wheel barrow impossible.

I think you need to understand what it is venting, where it would be placed and how far it would stick out.

user1497643032 · 11/06/2020 21:39

@Tootles2 yes, I will text d builder tomorrow to ask. Although I have my own boiler vent on my wall facing that side access which is mine & the property has no window there only the wall.

Is this a vent for a boiler? Our neighbours did this, although the space was probably two/three times a wide as yours. It was horrendous! It was put in almost opposite an outside door to our kitchen. On the first evening I came into the kitchen, having left the side door open, I literally couldn’t see our kitchen units. I couldn’t see to make my way outside, the whole side passage was filled with vapour.

We had some difficult conversations, it didn’t help that he insisted on addressing me as ‘my dear girl’!
His wife did see how this was not acceptable, and I felt awful as they had to change their whole kitchen design, but it couldn’t be left as it was.

Oh I’m so sorry, I started typing before your latest post was up. I don’t want to upset you, it was just water vapour, it’s just that there was a lot of it!

user1497643032 · 11/06/2020 22:21

@StarintheMorning oh no you didn't get me upset at all- not your fault. The whole vent issue was just sinking on as I was typing as that's just the way I am now post coma- things do not sink in instantly- it takes time.

Thank goodness for that!

I can completely understand your concern over this, having gone through what you have described. If your boiler vent is on that wall then I’m sure it will be ok. The one my neighbour installed was a huge floor standing boiler, heating 12 rooms, so produced a lot of vapour!

freeadviceforworriedpeople · 12/06/2020 10:30

@superram I am really sorry about your carbon monoxide incident. I would love to hear about it. I run a charity and have done since 1995 - you can find me CO-Gas Safety. My email is [email protected] or ring 07803 088688

user1497643032 · 12/06/2020 12:31

@user1497643032 I’m sure @freeadviceforworriedpeople is sincere but just be cautious in case it turns into a compensation scam. Not accusing you of anything free and not suggesting you’re naive user - just a reminder not to immediately trust people you meet online.

user1497643032 · 12/06/2020 14:13

@RedRed9 thanks very much. I know and I will be very careful- too many scammers around 🤦🏽‍♀️

Called the council and was told it is a civil matter- that is either I let them into my garden to put up a vent or I dont. Basically, it's between me & the neighbour 🙄. I was hoping there are clearly written rules & regulations. Council also said if I do allow them to put up the vent, & then later find that there too much or dangerous fumes etc, I could then report the matter to the environmental blah blah blah 🙄🙄
Anyway sent a msg to d builder that I am refusing access as I would want more info, the new owner of the property then sent me a msg saying she is not an expert but would be able to help with explaining further as she understands the builders are going to be providing more info.
The way I see it, I do not think I would be allowing the vent because my kitchen back door is facing that wall and I do sit out in that part of the garden with my kids & do not want fumes in my garden.
