We currently pay about £400 but are about to move and it will be closer to £850. Just wondered if this is average? tia

We spend only £40 ish on food a week, same on petrol just for essential commuting

vacua · 23/09/2007 23:43

how can you only spend that though? what about shampoo, loo paper etc., and milk and actual meals? don't see how anyone can manage on that, I couldn't do the packed lunches for £40 I don't think

LyraBelacqua · 23/09/2007 23:45

£1,200 pcm in south west London. We have a little house with a big mortgage.

Lauriefairycake · 23/09/2007 23:48

i buy a lot of fruit and veg from the market, have chickens (for eggs, not to kill), bake my own bread/hoummous

And have beans on toast twice a week

Actually pretty fussy about food, only buy organic meat so don't eat a lot of it, but buy organic milk (and go to Costco for whole brie's etc)

We have packed lunches too - mostly bread, cheese, potato salad and a mixed salad, flask of homemade soup

vacua · 23/09/2007 23:54

I feel wasteful and ashamed, you are going to tell me that you work 60 hours a week too aren't you?

NotAnOtter · 23/09/2007 23:55

i could not feed my family on that!

LittleMinx · 23/09/2007 23:59

we have a big mortgage but council tax and bills arent high........reason our mortgage is high is because we took out a 12yr mortgage (not a 25/30yr one ) with a 10yr fixed rate of 4.75 or 4.85 (cant remember which now)

we live in a 3 bed new build in hertfordshire and LOVE our house and its worth every penny!!

In 9yrs we will be mortgage free so its worth paying more now. by cutting 13/15yrs off our mortgage we save thousands in interest.

we manage really well and have nice holidays but thats only becasue i am good with money and the only debt we have is our mortgage. we save for everything up front, even new cars....that way we save TONS as dont have any interest to pay on anything other than a mortgage.

vacua · 24/09/2007 00:00

I do have 2 teenagers and 1 younger child and do about 2000 miles a month tho

LittleMinx · 24/09/2007 00:03

I work between 55 and 65hrs a week but LOVE my job so dont mind at all!! work hard and play hard i say

KristinaM · 24/09/2007 00:04

£256

vacua · 24/09/2007 00:04

but do you make bread and stuff when you get home?

NotAnOtter · 24/09/2007 00:05

i feel a faliure

whats new?

Lauriefairycake · 24/09/2007 00:07

The breadmaker makes the bread

I don't work 60 hours a week though, I'm a student nurse and work 3 other jobs (as a counsellor, all voluntary) so don't get paid for any of them. Hence being just a tiny bit poor.

You've got your hands full vacua with 3 children. I'm a foster parent but have no children here at the moment - the £40 was just for me and dh

Lauriefairycake · 24/09/2007 00:08

And i want to be Littleminx - she sounds really well off.

NannyL · 24/09/2007 00:08

if you have a bread maker machine it takes about 1 minute (or less to) put in the ingrediants and switch on!

vacua · 24/09/2007 00:10

yes and of course I am ON MY OWN without the benefit of any maintenance from my ex husband so I qualify for a small dull medal at least

LittleMinx · 24/09/2007 00:14

omg lol lauriefairycake .......... trust me i aint well off at moment but in 9yrs i bloody hope to be

Mind you, if the housing market comes down i will be worse off as less commission for me!!

Notanotter.....im sure your not a failure xx

1dilemma · 24/09/2007 00:18

Actually in a low interest rate world your salary will not be going up that much, especially not if you work for the public sector under GB pegging everyone to 1.9% isn't he, that's sub even the fiddled figures for cost of living increases!!

1dilemma · 24/09/2007 00:20

so yuu can't rely on that to make a big mortgage little (you need high interest rates to do that)

NotAnOtter · 24/09/2007 00:22

depressing

1dilemma · 24/09/2007 00:27

we need to find you a brightside NAO

you have a lovely house

got to go worried about mice!!

LittleMinx · 24/09/2007 00:43

1dilemma........ not sure if you were replying to me or not......i am easily confused ....... My mortgage will remain the same till its paid off in 9yrs now.....interest rates wont change my monthly amount.

house prices going down will give me a lower monthly salary however

nappyaddict · 24/09/2007 03:06

hazypops how do you manage to rent somewhere for £200 a month???

WideWebWitch · 24/09/2007 06:54

NAO, don't feel a failure, these figures all look REALLY low to me! You're not the only one!
