Orangery vs extension

We want to replace our conservatory at the back for the usual reasons:

  • too cold or hot
  • leaking and expensive to repair
  • not properly integrated to house

The new structure would be extending the rooms at the back so that the kitchen diner would be half in old house and half in new extension.

For those of you who have looked at orangery as an alternative to extension, what are the pros and cons?

Ours isnt an orangery but a garden room - windows on two sides, but tiled roof. It faces south but because of the tiled roof we dont get direct sun into the room in summer because the sun is high so stays cool, but warm in winter as the sun is lower. Weve had conservatories before but i do think i prefer what we have now. We inherited this room and it has separate electric underfloor heating but its very expensive to use so we just use an electric radiator when we need to.

Previously we had a conservatory off a kitchen But we had an aga and radiator so this helped keep the room warm in winter. It was hot during the day in summer but we just opened all the windows and skylights - was lovely first thing in the morning when it was still cool and again evening once the sun started to go down.

We find we love the room so much we do everything in it - sit, eat, hobbies etc! Its worth spending as much as you can to get a Decent build.

Do the extension with plenty of light coming in, best of both worlds and much more useful space.
