Our Edwardian house is totally 'done', extended kitchen, loft conversion etc. We have 2 sitting rooms, but one of them is the 'inner' middle room, open to the kitchen diner; although there's a side window it doesn't get much natural light as that looks out onto the side alley. It's cosy in the winter but pretty dark all year round. We're considering knocking through to the 'front' sitting room to gain some space and light. The current front sitting room is lovely but little used, so I'm hoping it will mean we use the whole living space a bit more ( atm we mostly live in the kitchen diner, which is lovely, with sofas etc, but it feels wasteful not really using such a big part of the house.) Also thinking of putting in some double doors so we can still have 2 rooms should we need/want that.
Can anyone who's done something similar give me an idea of costs and how disruptive/messy/lengthy it was to do? I know we'll need a structural engineer for calcs and building regs to sign off the steels. New flooring and complete redecoration assumed too. (No party wall issues to worry about though as detached.)
