Should I add a kitchen cabinet here - diagram

My kitchen is a square shape, with the cabinets on two sides. On the left side is the door to outside. The fridge is also on the left, and there is a step leading down into the kitchen.

I just feel like it's a strange layout. Wondering whether to put a small cabinet behind the door, just to add a bit more cupboard space and to make the kitchen into more of a horse-shoe shape?

What do you think...

(C means cupboard, W is washing machine, D is drawers, F is fridge and S is steps).

I'd say no. It may feel cramped at sink. You can always add something later if needs be, something free standing or on wheels. But I would leave space free

ShyTown · 08/06/2020 20:50

No, I wouldn’t. I think it would make it hard to comfortably use the sink.

MaggieFS · 08/06/2020 20:53

I wouldn't, I think it could make it cluttered, and I don't think your current layout is too odd.

You could always add a wheeled butchers block with drawers at a later date.

Wheel it around anywhere you need to, even have an island in the middle of the square.

Oh, and the cupboard space under the draining board will be a nightmare to access and therefore become wasted space.

If you could switch the sink out for a right hand draining board, so the draining board is above the washing machine, then it would make more sense to me for you to have a cupboard in the new space, with some kind of ingenious pulley-outy-rack system to effectively use all of the space.

As it is worth the draining board to the left, a cupboard there would make it really difficult to reach the far end/back of the draining board to use it properly.

Are your upper cupboards maximised using the full ceiling height? Good trick is to use base cupboards as wall cupboards because they’re taller.

*WITH the draining board, not worth

Is there no cupboard under the draining board that you would be blocking access to? I would put the bin there but you might have it somewhere else suitable already.

There are lots of clever systems you can get to access ‘blocked’ corner cupboards though (I’m assuming that OP is talking about replacing the base units tbh rather than just plonking a new cupboard in front of an existing one!)
