Nearly 4K for a wooden front door?!

Is that a standard price? The price includes;
Door frame...£800
Door (wooden)...£1850
Stained glass door panels... 2 x £375
Fan light panel... £170
Encapsulation of glass.. 2x £100
Total 3770..

We live near Manchester. This is so much more than I expected! We need to get rid of the pvc door and I opted for wooden because it's a nice material, but fuck me that's horrendously expensive!

Can we buy a door on eBay and get someone to fit it? Do I need to buy a door frame?

Nooooo
Absolutely no way unless you live in a grade 1 conservation area with one hell of a door Shock

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/06/2020 02:08

The door and door frame prices are very good
It’s the speviakistbglazinh then pushing it up further

Monty27 · 08/06/2020 02:12

Mind you OP in hindsight your spec is quite high. Was that your own ideas?

ChristmasCarcass · 08/06/2020 02:13

No, that’s not a normal price. The first hit on google is this, with prices starting at £130.

www.modadoors.co.uk/collections/classic-external-door-designs/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwoPL2BRDxARIsAEMm9y8ldpgHVKNVNfz73eZTULYU91lmumcsK3YisZ0x_VgW0ZHFZHmVgUYaAp22EALw_wcB

But I’m sure you were aware when you chose it that you hadn’t chosen a mid-range door. And half of your quote is stained glass, which again presumably didn’t escape your notice when you bought it.

Monty27 · 08/06/2020 04:27

The glass spec is complex in my mind's eye

Lemonylemony · 08/06/2020 07:53

Sounds like it’s probably not off the shelf, rather custom made to order, if anything I think the stained glass/encapsulation sounds cheaper than I might expect.

Get quotes for your particular requirements from at least 2 other companies to compare. Maybe if there’s a particular look/period you’re after you could look at architectural salvage places for an original/old door and refurb it, but you’d still need to pay someone to do the work, commission the glass, get it fitted etc.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 08/06/2020 08:10

If your door frame is uPVC then you would need to replace it too.
Does the price include fitting and hardware (locks, handles, hinges, letterbox, door numbers ?)

AssangesCat · 08/06/2020 08:22

We were quoted a fortune to have one fitted once. DH went and bought one from Wickes and fitted it himself for about 10% of what we were quoted. We were complimented on that door many times!

PigletJohn · 08/06/2020 08:42

It's not a normal price, but if you are a rich person in a grand home there are people who will cater to your desires.

That is the standard price for a made to measure solid wood door - quote for ours was even more than that but it's a huge door (
You can buy a standard off the peg wooden door & for a lot less and have it hung by a joiner - won't be as grand but still can be very nice
Depends what you want & if it's an opening size that can be made to work with an off the peg door
Speak to some joiners rather than just made to measure door companies.
As we had the original wooden door we had it refurbished and rehung and it looks & works like new - however quotes for a new one to be made were around the 8k mark as it's a single door 1.2m wide and quite ornate.

CottonSock · 08/06/2020 09:09

That sounds like a fancy door.

PigletJohn · 08/06/2020 12:51

Any joiner can make a door and frame. I had a simple LBF one made to measure, I think it was around £80 and he used some left-over oak for the frame with softwood boarding.

near me is a college that trains joiners, and they are required to make a door or window with nothing more than pencil, saw, planes and chisels. A joinery workshop would use power tools and take one-tenth the time.

good timber is rarely seen now that the tropical forests have been stripped for a hundred years, but a good joiner will know a suitable wood. If it is to be painted it doesn't need to be hardwood and should last at least a hundred years if protected from the weather by an open porch.
