Hi there, any help appreciated about areas in Nottingham.

What areas would you recommend that have good schools, town rather than village feel, good transport links into Nottingham Train Station/Town Centre.

Really like West Bridgeford but its quite pricey so any alternatives that have the same feel?

Beeston/Chilwell are popular places, good tram link into town and train station. Some nice cafes/restaurants, family friendly

If West Bridgford is too pricey, try Wilford, Compton Acres or Gamston. All the schools are rated at least ‘good’, but these areas are not as close to the attractions of WB - hence cheaper. Still easy to get to town (esp Wilford due to tram)

P.s. I love Nottingham, think it’s the best place to live! Happy to answer specific questions if needed.

Bluesheep8 · 07/06/2020 16:09

I came to say West Bridgeford, as already mentioned by pp.

Piper1879 · 07/06/2020 16:12

West Bridgford is pricey ... but a nice area. Most of the areas have good links into the city. I live in Carrington /Sherwood , a bus every seven minutes , literally takes minutes to get into town and a lovely area

augustusglupe · 07/06/2020 17:12

Yeah I agree with Beeston/Chilwell or West Bridgford if budget allows.

Teaandcrisps · 07/06/2020 18:11

Oh briliant - thanks so much. Really appreciate. Will have a renewed look - and yes please @CupcakesK would really appreciate specific questions on areas. Are Gamston, Wilford and Compton Acres more town or rural? Rural isnt my thing you see.

They are the suburbs of Nottingham, so definitely town rather than rural. It depends on the reasons that you prefer town over rural though, they have good transport links into the centre of Nottingham and some facilities (although WB has more, hence the price). But a few ‘villages’ are fairly big and have excellent links, facilities and schools - e.g. Keyworth or Ruddington

RhubarbCucumber · 07/06/2020 20:42

Woodthorpe and Mapperley, along with some bits of Gedling and Arnold are nice - there's good transport links into the town centre but also nice bars and restaurants along the high street in Mapperley, and lots of good schools. I think that houses around there are generally cheaper than some of the south of the river options.

Cdl84 · 07/06/2020 20:51

Agree with woodthorpe/ mapperley. I live there and houses much better value than west bridgford. Can walk to shops, pubs, etc. Several nice parks. Schools are good. Loads of buses into Nottingham every few minutes.

goteam · 08/06/2020 14:49

I have friends in Lady Bay which is the cheaper bit of West Bridgford. They enjoy it there. Close to the river and water sports centre. Not far to the town centre of West Bridgford but it has it's own cafes and shops and bus route to the city centre.

winningwhilstlosing · 08/06/2020 14:56

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I’m also looking at a move to Nottingham. I know West Bridgford from years ago and would love to move there - but it is indeed pricey. Does anyone know if there are areas to definitely avoid?

CupcakesK · 08/06/2020 15:44

There are some areas that historically have been a bit dodgy in terms of crime, but many of those are improving now. For places not to live, it really depends what what you’re looking for. I would avoid Lenton and the Arboretum areas as they are full of students! I’d also avoid St. Ann’s. Basically anywhere very close to the city centre.

Bluesheep8 · 09/06/2020 15:42

I remember Arnold being nice too

hellosun20 · 09/06/2020 15:48

Sherwood, Woodthorpe and Mapperley are all lovely. Sherwood has a real artsy vibe whereas Mapperley/Woodthorpe is more residential. Brilliant restaurants and bars round these areas and good schools too. Lady Bay is definitely a cheaper option to WB and I think it's actually much nicer.

MsMiaWallace · 09/06/2020 15:57

I'm from Nottingham too.
Look at Long Eaton. It does have Derbyshire Council but NG postcode.
Hucknall worth looking at too??
Near to City with great schools & public transport.
Also very nice new housing estates.

Clarabellawilliamson · 09/06/2020 16:00

Shhhhh everyone stop recommending Lady Bay! 🤫 Haha. No but seriously, it's lovely. Nottingham is a great city. Everyone has pretty much echoed what I would say, if WB is too pricey then Sherwood, Mapperly etc are better value. Gamston and Compton acres are newer build housing so you don't pay the premium for period properties but still good schools etc

Givemetrees · 09/06/2020 17:31

Nottingham is a really vibrant place to live. Big city, but also very close to lots of countryside for nice walks. Only 1hr 40 mins fast train straight into St Pancras so great for getting down to London quickly. It has an amazing tram network (Which goes straight through the railway station) and the buses are great too.

Neighbourhoods closer to the City that are considered nice neighbourhoods are Mapperley Park and The Park. You can walk into town from both. MP is next to Sherwood which as previous posters have said has a really arty vibe, with lots of independent shops and cafes/restaurants. Local primary schools have improved dramatically over the last decade and are now all good or outstanding. Mapperley itself is nice too, great schools again - good or outstanding on the whole, nice high street. Slightly further out. Woodthrope nice too.

Beeston is on the tram link and has a lot of new development happening over there. A little further out past the University of Nottingham, but doesn’t take long to get into town as it’s on the tram.

South of the river you have West Bridgford, which is very desirable. Very yummy mummy-ish and can be a bit footballer wives ish sometimes. Some really lovely houses, expensive, but it’s very busy. Lots of traffic around Central Avenue (where the shops/restaurants are). As previous posters have said, the outer bits Lady Bay, Compton Acres, Wilford Village are a bit cheaper but still nice.

Having lived in London for 15 years, I really like living here. Everyone is very friendly and down to earth. Much calmer way of life and really appreciate the facilities of a big city and easy access to countryside.

One slightly confusing thing is Nottingham City vs Nottinghamshire County Council, you could end up living in either, but it’s basically one big conurbation until you get to the outskirts and it changes to countryside and villages, and then it’s NCC. School districts could be in either City Council or County Council.

NotMeNoNo · 10/06/2020 21:32

I live in Wilford, I think its perfect. Easy bike into town, minutes to the river, tram, Lidl coming soon, cheaper than West Bridgford. Nottingham is great.

NotMeNoNo · 10/06/2020 21:36

Wilford, Gamston & Compton Acres are definitely part of the built up part of the city although. Ruddington is an actual village.

itispersonal · 10/06/2020 21:43

I'd say mapperley / woodthrope lots of parks, pubs. Gedling country park.
Gedling village is a nice area - outstanding schools but doesn't have the mummy/ community feel of Sherwood/ West bridgeford.

Bingham is one of the top places to live in Notts and the U.K.

lovelyupnorth · 10/06/2020 22:01

can't believe someone recommended Long Eaton - its a shit hole - and yes I did use to live there my parents are from Long Eaton and Sawley

Beeston, West Bridgeford good, but for me round there would head to Derbyshire or North Notts.

augustusglupe · 11/06/2020 19:20

Plain speaking there lovelyupnorth
I grew up in Stapleford, so I get where you’re coming from Grin
