Just that really - looked everywhere and the only
Thing I really like the look of is plykea but it's pretty pricey. Anyone know somewhere that does something a bit different?

Mid century as in walnut cabinets?

Toilenstripes · 06/06/2020 18:28

Imo it’s about the accessories. Get a plain kitchen and accessorise with midcentury artwork, vases, lights and stools.

mrnimmanimma · 06/06/2020 18:43

Realised I've been a bit lazy and googled plywood kitchens and there are loads. I can imagine it's going to be pricey tho!

This is a pic of one I love.

Our cabinets are Nobilia, bought from a local kitchen supply shop.

fartyface · 06/06/2020 19:01

What about freestanding elements?

ghislaine · 06/06/2020 19:21

Swan brand appliances do a 50s range. You could also get a diner style Formica table off eBay.

WellDidYa · 06/06/2020 19:23

Is mid century what we are calling the 50s now?

Francina670 · 06/06/2020 19:31

50s were the freestanding dressers and a table. Barely any storage as shopped daily. Unless you were in America of course where they had fridges and brightly coloured fitted kitchens with chrome accents.

Fitted kitchens came in later in this country. You need Formica rather than plywood. That’s not a mid century material.

I know this isn't what the OP wants, but when I was a child, in the early 80s, several relatives who had built their houses/put their kitchen in in the late 50s or early 60s had cupboards with sliding doors. It was quite a practical use of space as long as the doors slid in both directions and all bits of the cupboards were accessible.

When I was little my mum's kitchen was powder blue Formica. It was replaced in the 80s and of course the 80s version is all brown and cream and dated now, but the original one would be charmingly retro.

We've got an Uncommon Projects kitchen. It's fenix-fronted ply and it's lovely. It goes well in our conversion, which has mid-century vibes.

Not cheap, but it is very reasonable considering it's bespoke.

clevername · 06/06/2020 19:50

Sorry, here's the link to their site:

@clevername thanks Smile

Mid century for me is more 30s/40
So this kind of thing but fitted preferably although freestanding is a an option for sure.

Veterinari
Then perhaps you would be kind enough to show us what you think a mid-century kitchen looks like?

Beakyok · 06/06/2020 20:12

The kitchens by uncommon projects are stunning. What price range roughly are you talking about please?

277xo · 06/06/2020 20:13

Could look at Pluck - although not sure how much they are, I think they are similar to Plykea

chalkyc2 · 06/06/2020 20:18

@SingingSands they are lovely! OP I love plykea - are they v expensive? I also love these worktops - terrazzo - MKW surfaces
