Anyone have Indian black granite worktops?

We are thinking of this for our kitchen worktops and wondered if anyone had it and could tell me your thoughts?

Thanks

I don’t know if it’s Indian, but I have black granite worktops. If you are prepared to spend a lot of time wiping and buffing them, they look fabulous. Otherwise they show every smear and crumb. I’ve found granite to be a great surface for baking - nice and cool for dough etc

UrbanDoughnut · 02/06/2020 15:31

Hmm. Define ' a lot of time.' 😂

I wipe down my surfaces between two and three times a day so maybe I'll be ok?

Oh and are they super hard wearing? Would I still need a glass work top saver for example?

I have black granite worktops, and I agree they look lovely - if you're willing to spend ages polishing the bloody things. Otherwise they look a bit smeared and grimy all the time. You have to buff them up every time you wipe them down or they look pretty horrible and dirty, even though you know you just cleaned them properly (this often requires an additional spray of granite cleaner and quite a lot of buffing.)

My friend with black granite worktops says exactly the same thing about hers.

I used to have a white and grey speckled quartz worktop (in a previous house) and it was so much easier to keep clean - but still looked lovely and was lovely and cool etc.

SporadicNamechange · 02/06/2020 15:36

they're hard wearing though. You'd just be better with anything but black.

HermioneWeasley · 02/06/2020 16:58

I’d have thought with already doing 2-3 times a day you’ll be ok

They are incredibly hard wearing - you won’t need anything else (though I do still use chopping boards and I think you have to be careful to clean up fruit juice)

I have some sat in my flat this very moment as i'm having kitchens replaced. If you're happy with reusing worktops, and you're in the London area, they're yours! :)

Not sure if they're 'indian' lol

I absolutely hate mine. They’re a nightmare if you cook, because you can’t even make a piece of toast or pour a glass of water without them instantly looking terrible. Just very high maintenance.

I used to have gorgeous oak countertops which were perfect and needed very little special attention.

UrbanDoughnut · 02/06/2020 20:32

@smallgoon how very kind of you! Sadly I'm not in London but such a nice offer. Thank you

In what way does water make them look terrible?

I’ve black quartz, which is a less-characterful equivalent... and don’t find it smeary.
I live in a soft water area, so no limescale, I would guess that’s why? Or maybe the way light falls in our kitchen?

If they’re wiped with a greasy cloth, then obviously they are smeary then, but just using an averagely-clean dishcloth mine are fine. With a granite cleaning spray and clean cloth but no buffing they look great (that deep mirror-like shine).

I use chopping boards, I imagine you’d eventually get small scratches otherwise, but they do seem pretty robust.

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/06/2020 22:43

My friends have them in India where they are very popular - but they also have cleaners who manage their upkeep. They take a lot of polishing not to show every single mark.

ilikepurple · 02/06/2020 22:50

All the people I know with black granite have to keep them polished or they show every mark. I'd steer clear by that's just imo

Flamingolingo · 02/06/2020 22:56

We put dark grey granite in our old house, and it looked great but was hard work. We’ve just put a pale quartz in this house and I think it’s infinitely better. Much easier to keep clean, and all the benefits of stone in terms of baking etc

flirtygirl · 03/06/2020 15:14

I had the black midnight galaxy granite. So speckles and sparkling. Really easy to clean as just wipe and also looked great.

I think the people who find them hard work must have the plain high shine black granite.

You can also get black with different texture surface which are easy upkeep.

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2020 15:17

I have black granite work tops and certainly don’t spend any time buffing them or any other such crap.

A micro fibre cloth and method black granite cleaner, spritz on wipe off job done, look as good as they day I got them,

CrystalMaisie · 03/06/2020 15:25

I used to want black granite, until all my friends with it mined about the upkeep. I’ve got white mirror quartz worktops, always look fab, no work at all.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/06/2020 15:34

We've got black granite worktops. Dh cleans and buffs them every night and they look amazing- we've had them for 7 years. They are really hard wearing I put pans and .roasting dishes etc directly onto them although i still use chopping boards for food prep.

UrbanDoughnut · 03/06/2020 19:34

Think we will go for them, on balance! I have a main fitted water softener so no real limescale issues. I don't want an entire black - so it'll have the swirls and patterns in to disguise any smears anyway

We have them, with the sparkle in. I have recently discovered green “minky” cloths, which are meant for glass but they are nothing short of magical and life changing on granite.

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2020 19:38

We have black granite which came with the house. It’s taken me ages to not want to swap for a light colour but I don’t find them terrible in terms of maintenance.

GreyishDays · 03/06/2020 19:38

We had them, with the sparkle so not plain but they still looked awful if not dried after wiping. Next kitchen, we got a sample (of white granite) before ordering. I tried wiping it in situ to check it wasn’t the same. Could you do that?
