Pint stripper - nasty stuff, wear rubber gloves.
Heat gun - gets hot, take care (also take care of what the item is placed on if you use a heat gun - I learnt this the hard way)

Thick layer of Furniture stripper/paint stripper. Depending on the brand, apply for about 30 min, then scrape it off with a scraper. Don't let the the stripper get fully dry, add a light coat of stripper if it has dried out to reactivate it before scraping it off. Clean it with some medium wire wool dipped in white spirit.

Might need to repeat it a few times if its a lot of paint.

Thank you. I was hoping there would be a magical, easy solution Sad

What sort of paint did you use?

Do you have access to a jetwasher?

LadyEloise · 07/06/2020 10:28

Apologies PigletJohn I didn't see your reply to my query.
I used a paint suitable for outdoor wood.
We haven't got a power washer.
Would power washing it take the paint off ?

Apparently whatever was in Nitromors that made it so effective has been removed.
I just hoped that some Mumsnetter had a quick, easy, miracle solution to a slow, time consuming task.

Try to find out what sort of paint it was. For example it might have been garden shades, or shed stain, or oil-based gloss.

A jet washer will take paint off wood, but will not work well on gloss paint. It is effective on wax stain. It roughens the surface of the wood.

Nitromors will work on gloss paint but not on water paint or shed stain.

Sandpaper will work on most paints but will take a lot of time and effort on garden furniture which is not made of flat surfaces.

Thank you . It's not gloss

It's garden shades, green grey.

I think a jetwasher will get it off. Use fine sandpaper to smooth off any roughness before oiling. if you want to regularise the timber colour, apply spirit-based wood dye (not stain) such as colron or rustins and let it dry before oiling.

Oil is best applied in multiple thin coats, allowing each to soak in and dry before applying the next. It must not pool on the surface like varnish. Rub off any excess with a rag before it sets.

Thank you PigletJohn for your advice.
