Bay window curtain poles

Does anyone have any suggestions? We have 4 round bay windows in our new house. The current owners have curtains across the front of the bay, so lose a whole amount of space in the bay once the curtains are closed. The pole would need to be ceiling hung as the windows are ceiling to window ledge as the bay ceiling is lower than the rest of the room. I've attached a picture from one of the bedrooms to give you an idea.

We have ones that flex so they just curve with the shape window frame.

Track rather than pole though.

You have two problems:
1/ top fixing. If you want a bay window pole with bypass rings, these cannot be top fixed. The silentgliss metropole might be able to br top fixed but would be about £1000 including fitting etc.
As mentioned before, you can bend a track to fit and top fix.
2/ I can't see your sills but you might have to get sill length curtains ( I can't tell)
Is your house 1920's?
Typical windows for that time. Bow windows.

Lazypuppy · 01/06/2020 10:51

Yep you need track instead of pole, as you can bend them easily. We went for short windowsill length curtains instead of floor length

GherkinsOnToast · 01/06/2020 11:47

@7to25 it's a 1930s house, I has suspected oil length curtains too :(

Will get the person we are hoping to make our curtains to come around and sort tracks too - too much hassle for my brain.

Would you consider individual blinds for each window pane? They could be ceiling hung but I can see it would make opening and closing them quite a task. Hope you find a solution as it would be a shame to lose the space and look of a bay

lapofhonour5 · 01/06/2020 14:55

We have Silentgliss Metropole which are curved to fit the bay. Someone came round to measure then ordered the poles and fitted them. Very smooth glide and look just like a normal bay pole.

NotMeNoNo · 01/06/2020 17:18

We have track in ours- it's just seen as a neat white strip that disappears into the ceiling/moulding. I have sill length curtains too though so complete MN interior design fail.

If you get your curtains with triple pleat heading, they stack back more closely.

We have this in our bay window:

Works really well but you cant have very heavy curtains.

LovingLen · 02/06/2020 19:15

We also have a track, bought from Dunelm for about £20 iirc, and curtains that hang about 4 inches below the sill so they can tuck behind the radiator On your picture the top of your bay looks similar to ours and DH hung the track from the small ceiling bit and curved it round

dementedma · 02/06/2020 19:17

We gave up and got individual blinds for each window. In winter we put a pole up across the bay with heavy curtains to make the room a bit warmer. We lose a bit of space but thats ok.

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/06/2020 19:22

My windows are the same.
I have a flexible track that I attach to the ceiling.

I have a top fixed pole in my (simpler) square bay with passing rings. I got it made to measure from Merrick and Day www.merrick-day.com/acatalog/19mm_Wrought_Iron_Bay_Window_Pole_Packs_.html I'm not sure if they could do one for your shape of window but maybe give them a call. They do a couple of different brackets so you need to make sure you get the right ones for your window.
TiddleTaddleTat · 02/06/2020 23:35

You can get bay poles but in my experience they are expensive and fiddly to install. We have tracks fixed above the windows. They don't look amazing but are mostly covered with curtain.
In fact downstairs we've installed two tracks, one above the other (top one is projected from the wall) so we have voiles for privacy. Works wells

www.curtainpoles.co.uk/index4.htm

This company make forged iron curtain poles to measure. They have a number of bay window options.

The thing with bay windows if they only have brackets at the ends and centre, they can move about unless the brackets are very substantial. Unless you are desperate for the look of a pole, a neat low profile track will save you x100 the hassle.

Quite honestly I tried poles when I lived in a 1930s house and they just didn't look good or work well. just get a track. There are forged iron ones you can order but they cost a fortune and are touch and go. I prefer eyelet curtains myself but I wouldn't bother in a curved spot.
Thank God my new house is all straight lines and small cottage windows.

GherkinsOnToast · 03/06/2020 13:23

thanks all - track it is then!

We have a made to measure silentgliss one too. It was £££.

friendlycat · 03/06/2020 17:20

I had to get the curtain makers to sort them out as it was too complicated also with the depth of the windowsill. They brought along a carpenter who built outward brackets and hid behind wooden plinth with a bendable track underneath.

StarintheMorning · 03/06/2020 17:42

We have an Edwardian house, with square bays. We used the flexible track linked to above, it has been brilliant. You can put quite a tight curve on the track which clips into place. We have full length heavy, lined curtains with it. The dimensions are large, 100” long by about the same width per curtain, so they are heavy, but the track has coped admirably.
We have a wonderful furnishing shop in our town, who quoted £400ish for them to get something made, although I dare say it would have been installed with less swearing!
