Worktop help

I really dislike out current worktops, we bought and fitted a nice kitchen from DIY kitchens then topped it off with cheap crappy laminate worktops which constantly chip. I'm desperate to replace them with something more solid but all of the ones I'm looking at (quartz, recycled glass) are slimline. Our current worktops are 38mm depth and the tiles go up to them so would cause a problem if we changed for something slimmer.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how either

We can get solid, nice worktops that are 38mm

We can get slimline worktops and cover the gap

Any other suggestion??!!!!

Thank you!!!

Smallgoon · 31/05/2020 21:18

We bought laminate worktop from DIY Kitchens to go on our breakfast bar. It was the quartz stone square edge. It's only been in 18 months but we absolutely love it, it's so easy to keep clean and looks so good I've had lots of friends think it's stone. We're re-doing the rest of the kitchen to match the breakfast bar and will be using the same worktop.

Smallgoon · 31/05/2020 21:56

@Betty98 Apologies, I should have been clearer. I meant OP could post a pic as I wasn't sure I understood the issue with tiles. Blush

Smallgoon · 31/05/2020 21:58

@CoxwellHuge Would love to see a pic! I'm in the market for a worktop too and I'm just finding it's an absolute minefield!

CoxwellHuge · 31/05/2020 22:11

We put and extension on about 18months who which opened the kitchen up, so we put a breakfast bar on. I only have a photo from when we first did the island. We kept the rest of the kitchen as the house and kitchen were only 3.5 years old at that point but it just makes the rest of the kitchen look really cheap and crap in comparison. Thankfully we're now we're in a position to change the rest to match. I've designed it on the DIY Kitchens website and am just waiting for prices back from a couple of fitters. It's too frustrating trying to find a photo on my phone so will take one and post it tomorrow.

Betty98 · 31/05/2020 22:48

@Smallgoon haha yes don’t worry I realised... I was off searching for a picture so didn’t see your post. I thought I needed one to explain what I meant as I’m not sure what they’re called 😂

Smallgoon · 31/05/2020 23:38

@Betty98 I think they're called an upstand Smile

@CoxwellHuge I was told not to get my worktop from the kitchen supplier as I could get it cheaper elsewhere, but I wonder if DIY Kitchens can supply at a similar price... Did they fit it for you also? And do they measure, or just cut and deliver based on measurements you provide them? I'm so clueless on worktops!

ningaj · 01/06/2020 08:28

Thanks for your replies. Haven't considered an upstand - we wouldn't need one round the breakfast bar as there are no tiles but would need one in the tiled bits.

Also is there a big variance in laminate? Is it just that we've bought a cheap crap one? Might be worth going back to DIY kitchens and looking at theres?

Have attached pics of

Chipped worktop

(Sorry for the mess, tried to shove it mostly to the side!!!!)

There's are companies that do some kind of granite overlay over your existing worktops. Granite Transformations is one. No idea if they are any good, but it might be worth a look.

sluj · 01/06/2020 08:53

DIY kitchens work in partnership with Worktops Express to source worktops so it might be worth looking at them online.

CoxwellHuge · 01/06/2020 08:54

Apologies for the mess, this is our breakfast bar, units, worktop and handles all came from DIY Kitchens. We went for the 2000mm x 940mm square edge breakfast bar as it is finished on all sides. We'll be using the same worktop for the rest of the kitchen, the normal worktop is finished on 3 sides. I absolutely love it, I was worried it would stain. It it's really hard wearing, I've discovered red wine circles on it the morning after and they've still wiped off no problem.

I really like it - love the colour too. Is it the Duropal brand? I like the fact you can get the gable / downturn bits too. Definitely going to look into this.

CoxwellHuge · 01/06/2020 10:10

It is from the Durapol range, I absolutely love it and so easy look after. I've discovered red wine rings the morning after and a spray of kitchen cleaner, wipe with a damp cloth and gone. I've never know a laminate to look and feel so good, it's just made the rest of our worktops look really cheap and awful.!

I've had lots of people think it's stone, even my cleaner asked if we were using a specialist cleaning product as she thought it was stone.!

NotMeNoNo · 01/06/2020 11:45

It looks like the edge banding is chipping not the actual worktop. Perhaps it's a poor quality edging or wasn't stuck on properly? It is possible to get better edging put on professionally - maybe try a worktop company and send your photos , see if they have any ideas?

MoreGinPlease2020 · 02/06/2020 05:45

I have a Granite Transformations countertop and absolutely love it!

isseywith4vampirecats · 02/06/2020 16:04

we have just ordered our kitchen from DIy kitchens and went for the Carrera marble laminate with the rounded edge instead of the square one and they came in at £213 each for four metre lengths
