Countrywide Conveyancers

Anyone have any idea if all their conveyancing solicitors are furloughed?

Cannot for the life of me get any update re: our house move.
Automated emails/telephone messages... etc.. Absolutely no updates what so ever. Our chain is ready to exchange and complete but cannot continue because of the hold up with countrywide, they are completely uncontactable at the minute.
My only guess is half their staff are furloughed and the rest have too much work??

That's utterly crap! Is this a firm of solicitors?

ProfessorPollington · 30/05/2020 13:15

Threaten to alert the SRA on your next message. And then do alert the SRA. That is unprofessional conduct.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 30/05/2020 13:16

We used them years ago and they were rubbish...so slow and so much chasing by us

Geepee71 · 30/05/2020 13:48

They contacted us last week and gave option to wait for them to re-start surveys, but no idea when, go to moving portal or have refund.

We've gone to moving portal and survey is booked for Tuesday.

Call was from a call centre

eurochick · 30/05/2020 13:52

Your engagement letter should set out a complaints procedure. Use that.

Barton10 · 30/05/2020 13:55

I have worked in conveyancing for years and hate getting them on the other side of a transaction. They have a really bad reputation. I wouldn’t advise anyone to use them. Always use a firm local to you. All you can do is report them to the SRA

Their regulatory body is the CLC. Use the firm's complaints procedure, then complain to CLC if necessary.

User202004 · 30/05/2020 16:29

We are moving atm and struggling due to staffing, I'm really pissed off tbh because it seems loads of staff are still furloughed. The property market seems pretty buoyant in my area, the housing market is open from what I can see and there will be backlogs of 8 weeks so I really can't see the justification for having large amounts of staff furloughed when there is plenty of work to do, yes ok I appreciate there are childcare and shielding issues which means some furloughing will still be happening, but the cynic in me believes many employers are taking advantage of the system.

GU24Mum · 30/05/2020 17:19

They absolutely shouldn't have left you without someone to look after your file even if it's someone different if they've furloughed people. As a PP has said, having them on the other side of a transaction tends to induce a feeling of dread............

Spickle · 30/05/2020 17:49

I also sigh when Countryside are on the other side of a transaction. It seems as though you cannot get through to one particular person, they don't answer emails or even acknowledge them and trying to get updates is almost impossible.

I work in conveyancing and am currently furloughed. I agree that my firm does seem to be taking advantage of the system - one of the reasons for that is that during February, March, April and May, we didn't have as many completions as normal (and therefore be paid our fees) and also, we haven't received as many new instructions as we normally do.

Quite a few transactions have been aborted and, because we run a no completion, no fee scheme, we earned nothing from those transactions for which a considerable amount of work had already been done.

The firm cannot afford to pay a lot of their employees because of the reduced income/profit they've received, so the furlough scheme has helped them keep us as employees to be brought back into work as and when the firm's income can support it. Don't ask me why they didn't have enough funds in reserve, but it seems they are trying to convey the message that if the furlough scheme had not been introduced, all furloughed staff would have lost their jobs permanently, which of course would not help our clients and our reputation.

I think my firm will start a graduated return as and when the workload increases and completions are on the rise, but it's a very slow recovery at the moment.

GU24Mum · 30/05/2020 18:09

@Spickle - but presumably your firm is responsible and has passed your existing work to someone else whereas it sounds as though OP's conveyancer's e-mails are going into the ether!

Spickle · 30/05/2020 19:05

Yes all the work has been passed to those still working (from home currently).

ChampagneCommunist · 30/05/2020 19:11

Another Countryside hating lawyer here. Please don't make the mistake of thinking they are solicitors - they are not.

I have yet to deal with any case worth their who is qualified, apparently they do employ some Licensed Conveyancers.

Always a nightmare. I bet they aren't even cheap.

Soph88888 · 30/05/2020 19:39

They’re not solicitors.... and I can’t believe anyone could actually use them!
Buying or selling your biggest asset and you go for a cheap call centre.....

iusedtohavechickens · 30/05/2020 20:21

We used them for our house move last year and they were rubbish at replying so in the end I called the main office and asked for direct numbers which was slightly better x

AwaywiththePharaohs · 30/05/2020 20:33

Cuntrywise, as they were known by us a few years ago. Our bank made us use them and we ended up employing our own conveyancers on top.
They were a shambles and only got going when we threatened to report them to The Law Society.
Keep badgering op.

Bananaman123 · 30/05/2020 20:54

They are shocking as are premier property lawyers, neither are regulated by SRA so you need to report to CLC. Cowboys

AlmaMartyr · 30/05/2020 20:57

We used them 12 years ago and they were shockingly bad. We got a hefty discount from them in the end after complaining. Didn't use them the next time we moved. Hope you manage to get hold of them.

mumsy27 · 31/05/2020 00:46

my conveyancing is with PPL seems to be going fine, first case handler being furloughed, however they are proactive.
finger crossed, so far so good.

R2519 · 31/05/2020 07:24

We sold a few years ago. Had 3 offers on the table all very close in value. Went for the middle offer due to timescales and circumstances. When the information form came through both my estate agent and I saw they were using countrywide and I told my ea to spesk to them about changing solicitors due to numerous issues I've had in the past. My solicitor hated working with them as did my ea and we went with that couple due to their situation which wouldnt have had that benefit if they used countrywide.

I know its not ethical to dictate not working with a buyers solicitor but they delayed a move for me once by almost 2 months as they continually screwed things up. I vowed never to be involved with them again. My ea explained the situation to them. Initially they wouldn't budge but did when I said we wouldn't sell to them if they didn't.

I know its extreme but I would never ever go any where near them if I could help it!

MinnieMountain · 31/05/2020 07:30

@Spickle my firm's the same. And likewise work is slow to build up now.

We discussed with clients whether or not their matters should be put on hold when this all started and have been running a skeleton staff.
