Hi I'm after some up to date advice on Cambridgeshire. We are moving next year I need a lot of space for our money about 300,000 4 beds. Reading old posts they are not good about wisbech, my brother has recently moved there so that was my starting point! Any advice appreciated, primary schools also needed, don't need to commute. Tia 😊

Spend some time in Wisbeach one lockdown is over. If you like it, your brother lives there, it fits your budget and you don’t need to worry about it’s weak commuting connections it could be just the place for you.

Thankyou good advice 😊

This is sort of in our area. Wisbech has a terrible reputation like much of the Fens/Eastern rural towns. Nearby towns of Spalding, Boston are similar in nature with excellent house prices too. We have decided to follow the money and move to a "less desirable" town (not in that area) because it ticks all the boxes and we just can't justify buying half the house for a better post code, because thankfully the schools are good. So I guess what I'm saying is, expect to be told Wisbech is a dive, places with high immigration do get that rep I find, but write down your priorities and see how that compares.

There are outside villages like Wisbech St Mary's which are nice, there's some nice villages surrounding King's Lynn. I like Thorney between Peterborough and Wisbech, Cowbit and Crowland between Peterborough and Spalding have a slower pace of life and good house prices (a bit more than Wisbech). If you're looking at villages too.

I'd give Wisbech a miss! For that budget you could look towards Huntingdon/warboys or cambourne. If you could sacrifice a bedroom (and maybe extend later) you would get a lovely 3 bed in Ely which is beautiful.

Thank you both really helpful I'm coming completely out of the area so it's really helpful to have actual village names and ideas of where to look. Much appreciated 😊

What’s your motivation for moving? That might give some ideas as to what kind of area might suit you.

I grew up somewhere which everyone says not to move to but, like anywhere, there’s good bits and bad bits. I now live in an ‘idyllic’ location which attractions a £ premium and having spent all this time ‘stuck’ there, I’ll be honest and say I am liking it less and less.

Our motivation is to be able to buy and just can not afford to buy what we need where we are (hertfordshire) my brother and a close family friend are both near wisbech one st Andrew one Walpole highway, so my search has naturally started there as the prices are great, I have 4 children so need space! I have horses and dogs love the countryside. My husband will still be working down here mainly but will stay a few nights with his parents, a friend has just moved to Boston which also on paper looks good 🙈

It's so hard because people are so opinionated and a lot of the time haven't actually lived there. £300,000 could get you such a lovely house up here. I wish I could help more but I don't know Wisbech that well, I have a friend very happy in Swineshead (not the prettiest name!).

I go on the local Facebook groups to get a feel, but be warned if you ask what a place is like the undesirables who've never bothered to venture out of the area will say it's a dump, and usually blame the "foreigners"....

Ely is lovely. I would take a look there. St Ives and Huntington are also good.

Brock79 · 31/05/2020 09:24

You've all given me great food for thought Thank you. I will def be having a few trips around to get the feel of places. Thanks all 😊

Yes Ely is nice, but you will get half the house you'd get in the north of the county which is surely the point of the move! Not everyone wants to sacrifice a home for a "naice" area.
