Removing fitted wardrobes

Hello,
We've just put in an offer on a house (check me out trying to sound nonchalant!) One thing I'd really like to do if we get it is remove the fitted wardrobes in the master bedroom as I think they look dated and I hate the idea of sleeping under the top cupboards.

I'm assuming it's a case of ripping them out and replastering the wall? Any idea how much that would cost? We're in the South East, not in London.

One more assumption - I'm guessing you can't just rip out the middle bit above our heads, and leave the wardrobes either side? That wouldn't be my preference anyway, but I'm just trying to figure out options.

Thanks!

Sorry, I don’t know, but I think those are lovely fitted wardrobes and will give you loads of storage space.
I think the current owners’ bedroom clashes horribly with the paint and curtains but your bed and/or a lick of paint might work wonders.

I’ve taken down fitted wardrobes.. just unscrew it and take it down a piece at a time, then you may not need to replaster, maybe just some filler for any holes and then sand that down and redecorate. If you want to leave wardrobes either side, I’d remove the middle bit first and see what’s left, then try remove that. Again may only need a bit of filler and a sand Down before painting! It’s really easy tbh. If I can do it, anyone can. Good luck with the move! X

Thanks @Papergirl1968. That is my husband's view! Although he does get my point about sleeping underneath the cupboards. If it helps, there are matching cupboards all the way along the opposite wall too, so even he - king of storage! - concedes that we could live without them.

Huh! Thanks @Dontsayyouloveme, I had no idea it could be done so simply! I shall step away from my imagined sledgehammer...

It should be very easy, but try living with them first. We rented a place with an identical set up which at first I hated but after a couple of weeks I changed my mind on it entirely. Huge amounts of storage space, I would be very tempted to have something similar again.

Depends how they have been out up. The norm is to fix a baton to the wall nd the cupboards are then bolted to that so you may find you can just unscrew everything and fill a few holes. As for removing just the over the bed section, in theory yes but it very much depends how they have put them up. If they have done like my dad they may have glued them together.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Now we just need to actually buy the place Wink

Just jumping on this all thread to see if you mansged to do this as our wardrobes are nearly identical andnl we also want to cut out middle section.

That overhead bit offers a huge amount of storage. I'd live for it before you get rid of it. Those wardrobes are really decent
