Where to live near Manchester?

We were looking to move from salford quays before lockdown but the last few months have changed what we are looking for. We will now be able to work at home more so are considering moving further out. We have been looking in south Manchester but you don’t get much for your money.
Has anyone got any suggestions of nice areas/towns that are max 1 hour commute by public transport? We need 3 bedrooms and ideally don’t want to spend more that 450k.

Greenfield was my first bet. Some four bed detached properties available for £350k so well under budget and it’s gorgeous.

I’ve got friends in Woodhouses which I LOVE, but the surrounding areas aren’t fantastic. The village itself though is gorgeous.

Disley is also nice but the road to/from Manchester is awful.

Bluesheep8 · 29/05/2020 14:30

What about villages towards Huddersfield? Next stop after Greenfield is Marsden or Slaithwaite is after that...

Mirrorxx · 29/05/2020 14:57

I like slaithwaithe but didn’t think the train was very reliable. It’s a nice village though.
I like marple but not much available

As you’re in salford quays have you considered Prestwich, Worsley?Still close enough to the action but decent areas. There is also Rossendale in the north or Macclesfield in the south, so still green and you’d get a lovely home there - We are currently looking at those areas and live in Salford too!

Squ1ggle · 29/05/2020 22:00

Definitely prestwich or whitefield, still lots of amenities but not as crazy prices as south Manchester (although catching up). Great motorway access and the Metrolink into the city centre

Marple & New Mills

GreyGardens88 · 30/05/2020 12:46

I don't like anywhere around Manchester, sorry!

gwilt · 30/05/2020 12:52

Ramsbottom. A gem.

bandbsmummy · 30/05/2020 13:21

Another vote for Macclesfield. We've lived here 5 years now and still find new gems. We're about a mile from the station but it's so quiet. It's less than an hour door to door into the office by train.

Mirrorxx · 30/05/2020 16:28

Ramsbottom doesn’t have a tram or train so not suitable.
We have considered prestwich but there have been no houses we like.
I love marple but nothing for sale that we like. I will take a look at macclesfield but the transport looks good.
Otherwise we are stuck with something smaller on sale or didsbury, but we were hoping to not buy a mid terrace.

Second Greenfield or Uppermill. I wouldn't go over the hill to Marsden/Slaithwaite (though both are very nice) as they're in the West Yorkshire public transport region rather than Manchester and tickets cost a lot more.

cantbelievemyeyes · 30/05/2020 17:53

Another vote for Macclesfield - moved here Jan 2019. We love it - great for independent pubs/ restaurants, countryside on the doorstep and quick trains to Manchester (and obviously London & Birmingham in the other direction). You could get something very nice for that budget.

Sunflowersok · 08/06/2020 15:48

A bit out of reach maybe, but ramsbottom and rossendale is a hit. There’s. Lovely village called loveclough in rossendale which I have always found lovely.

Loads of Quaint places bury way.

Sunflowersok · 08/06/2020 15:49

Apologises just seems your update on ransbottom!

Africa2go · 08/06/2020 16:08

Do you need schools / childcare? South Manchester (Trafford) is expensive because practically all the schools are outstanding. I would suggest somewhere on the tram line wherever you go - it is usually so much faster than the train / driving around Manchester which is particularly horrendous from most suburbs into the city.

Jennyie1 · 09/06/2020 14:02

I've just sold in Cheadle Hulme, yes, you don't get much for your money in South Manchester.

I am currently in rented as my original purchase fell through. I was buying in a small village north of Ramsbottom. I'm still buying nearby, in Greenmount, north of Bury.

Helmshore, Ramsbottom, Edenfield, Affetside. A £450k budget will go far in those areas.

minniemoll · 09/06/2020 14:04

Rawtenstall is lovely, and well within your budget. There's no train link, but the Witchway bus service runs every 15 mins to Manchester and takes about 45 minutes.

minniemoll · 09/06/2020 14:07

This is a lovely 4 bed for £365k, minutes from the centre of Rawtenstall.

Newchurch Road, Rawtenstall, Rossendale

Jennyie1 · 09/06/2020 14:08

@Sunflowersok Loveclough is very nice, and its immediate surrounding areas. I've viewed so many properties Rossendale/Rawtenstall/Ramsbottom!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 09/06/2020 14:13

Hebden Bridge or Todmorden?

BabyMoonPie · 09/06/2020 14:28

Shaw /Milnrow /New Hey are all on the tram line and very affordable (further away from the city centre but close to countryside).

Taishan · 09/06/2020 16:23

Warrington is perfect.
We are 2 minutes from A49 junction 9
Exactly half way between Manchester and Liverpool (20 minutes each city)
We have the M62 just to the North of Warrington Liverpool and North Manchester)
We have the M56 just to the South of Warrington (South Manchester and North Wales)
And who can forget the big M6 giving us great North and South transportation.

Mirrorxx · 09/06/2020 19:14

@Taishan unfortunately we are looking for somewhere with tran or train, not driving to Manchester.

The train line to hebden bridge is just too unreliable. Otherwise I really like the town.

I think we will look more at macclesfield and marple but a couple of nice places have come up in sale/altrincham in last week that we want to view as well

MummaGiles · 09/06/2020 19:15

Glossop? For £450k you could get a 5 bed detached. 30 mins into Manchester on the train.

glasshalfsomething · 09/06/2020 19:25

There are some lovely and more reasonable priced areas of Stockport. Cale Green, Cheadle Heath, Romiley etc
