Moving to Lingfield? Flight path issues?

Hi all, the lockdown and everything going on has made me and my husband decide to leave London and buy somewhere a lot greener, with good walks and just a slower pace of life really.

After lots of painful research we’re looking to buy in Lingfield - near the primary school. However (perhaps my research wasn’t rigorous enough!) I’ve noticed Lingfield is on the Gatwick flight path and so I’m worried that we’ll hear planes constantly - which might drive me a bit mad - especially when in the garden. The agent mentioned that our side of the village isn’t too bad but it’s impossible to tell right now given there are very limited flights.

Wondered if anyone lives or has stayed in Lingfield and could shed a bit of light on what the planes were like pre-covid. Is the noise is as bad as some of the reviews of the Long Acre camp site (also in Lingfield) make out.

Thanks so much!

I grew up in Lingfield under the flight path. All the planes land over the village 99.9% of the time unless there is some atypical wind thing going on. Landing is much quieter than takeoff! I don’t remember them being an issue at all, I mean I obviously I knew they were there and visitors from outside the area would notice them but I remember lots of relaxing times in the garden and have no recollection of being woken up or disturbed by them.
The upside of course is that holidays are very very easy and that Gatwick/three bridges train line is a good backup line for London if the East Grinstead one is down for any reason.
Where are you moving from?

Thanks Thinkle, this is really helpful! It seemed like such a beautiful place to grow up when we went to see the house but the reviews of the camp site have made me nervous that by the time we move in, and when planes are back to normal, I’ll feel like I live at Gatwick airport - Confused but I doesn’t sound like that like be the case.

Did the people visiting have trouble sleeping etc? I suppose plane noise is something you get use to anyway!

Hadn’t thought of those upsides - that’s a good point. Where do you live now? Would you ever move back to Lingfield?

Also - sorry, do you mean they land 99.9% of the time rather take off - rather than 99.9% of all flights land over the village Smile

We’ve lived in Tooting, South London, a few years so used seeing planes and a little plane noises but that’s much further from any airports.

Thanks!

Hey, I live in London now and I wouldn’t move back but that because most people I’m still close to have moved on from there and there is no draw for me. It’s a nice commuter village with easy access to London, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells, Ashdown Forest, Hever, blue bell railway etc etc. It wasn’t particularly diverse when I was growing up and that would be an issue for me now but I do recognise that i had access to lots of interesting places and green space. I would recommend it to young families looking for commuter belt for sure.

On the whole it’ll be much quieter than tooting. It’s a different type of noise that you can tune out. Not loud cars/music or people shouting in the street at night (assuming tooting is similar to my part of London)

Yes sorry I meant most planes land so are quieter. There musts still be some coming in and out now. If you are worried there are some nice walks behind the station (Now that we are allowed to drive for exercise), even the footpath that links to the station to the Star Inn. That’ll give you a feel for plane noise away from traffic.

Can’t recall guests complaining about plane noise at night ever and there are restrictions on it after a certain time anyway aren’t there?.

I have family who live down there.

Honestly, I do notice the planes but don't find them particularly intrusive. It's barely noticiable indoors and not so loud that say, you can't have a conversation outdoors when one passes. My family have long since gotten used to them.

It's a lovely village and has some bloody good restaurants. Race days can be a bit of a pain in the arse apparently, and they race very regularly in the summer in normal times.

My husband and I live the idea of Lingfield, it looks beautiful and commutable to work. What is the local primary like, and what is the range of people like? I grew up in London so village living would be new to me! Thanks
