Loft conversion - ceiling lowered

Anyone had this done? Had a builder round who said ceilings need to be lowered to accomodate a loft conversion. There’s room to do it but how messy is it? Do they put the new ceiling in before thy take out the old one!

Haven't had it done but if you need the clearance in the loft then they lower the ceiling in the floor below. Of course it's messy. It looks a right bloody state tbh! New joists go in and ceiling replaced then they can get on with the loft bit

Thanks.

I had read somewhere that they fit the new ceiling first and it’s not as bad as you expect. That’s why I wondered if anyone had had it done.

We are in the middle of it. Made much less mess than I thought it might (although I think I expected it to be awful!). Yes they take down ceiling, then build new one.
It has worked well in our victorian house as the ceilings were high to begin with some don't feel too low anywhere now

We did. It was an unbelievable mess. We had to move out.

I guess the level of mess depends on your expectations, and on how the builder does it.
One builder who quoted suggested we move out for 3 months. The one who got the job completely boxed off the two rooms where ceilings are being lowered so that the rest of the house (including remaining upstairs bedroom) are liveable whilst they do the work. But the rooms below are certainly unusable for a while

Ugh. Sounds like a nightmare! And we couldn’t move out.
