Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone could help from experience or have pictures to help?
I am in the process of buying a new build home with a West north west facing back garden(290degrees) and I am worried about the sun I will get in the back garden?

The garden is approx 30m wide and 23m long

Thanks in advance

We have a NW facing garden which is fab.

I am old fashioned and only work in feet when it comes to houses. Ours is a bit larger than average.

The left hand fence is shady most of the time. The right hand starts shady then gets sun, the back right corner of the house gets end of day sun.

Hi, thanks for the information. Erm in old money I think 30m is about 100ft.

I’ve tried to work it out n thought maybe have some patio down the right hand side aswell as the back of the house so Covered for most of the day.

the garden sounds pretty big.

the area near the house might be shady but you'll get plenty of sun at the far end.

my garden faces NE. I have a small tree + a shade garden (ferns etc) near the house and then a sunny lawn further out. It works well and the house stays cool in summer because most of the doors & windows face north.

Patio outside house still very sunny at 7pm this evening by the way!

Ours is similar, the good news is that the now apparently very unfashionable conservatory doesn't get too hot. In the summer we swap the furniture around and put the dining table in there.

Ours is W/NW and I love it. I prefer the afternoon/ evening light to the morning, and it’s definitely sunny. I can’t keep anything alive back there except geraniums at the moment because of the hot afternoon sun!

@Lilyzara - RELAX!

Look at the mathematical bearings on this link. You will see that 270 degrees is West facing and 315 degrees is North West facing. So, you are not North West facing. Your 290 degrees is closer to being a West facing garden than a North (000/360 degrees) facing Garden by far. Smile

South facing garden is traditionally desirable. However, imo, it's a slightly different story for new builds because they're so well insulated that a south facing new build garden would easily become too hot in the back rooms. Sunlight is great, but sun damage is not so great. South Facing Garden: Essential Or Desirable?

Also, are your garden measurements 30m by 23 metres accurate? That is 690 square metres. Are those the measurement for your entire plot (including garden, house, garage and front garden) or just solely your garden? New build gardens (even for the most largest and most expensive house plots) are well known not to be generous in size. So, if those are your measurements then that is quite a rare find - land is at a premium and your developers have been generous with their gardens!

People can give you some experiences based on their gardens' directions, but in the end there are always other factors involved. Such as whether the garden is overlooked by other houses or there's a tree etc.

So, you will just have to wait and see what happens when you move in and take it from there.

If you want to find out more about gardens and which way they face, here are some links that are quite educational. They may help with getting an idea about what to expect and maybe some gardening tips too:

P.s. I'm in a similar position with being in the process with a new build. I've been there and done that with worrying about the sunlight and direction the house is facing. So, I totally get it! As it happens, mine is 260 degrees, so essentially West facing.

From research I gathered that a lot of people view West as Best because they can enjoy the afternoon and evening sun after work. The sun rises in the East (so lovely sun to wake up to if your Master bedroom and breakfast room face the rent) and sets in the West (can go in the garden after work and watch a beautiful sunset). It depends on your lifestyle too - that may not work for someone who works shifts, for example.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy your new home when it's ready! Smile

Could you ask to go and look in the garden one eve or is it still under construction?

sorry about typos and predictive text!

Thanks for the information.
The garden is 31m wide from fence on left to fence on the right and 23m from back door to back corner, there are some trees directly facing the back of the house but they are 30m away from back doors so hoping they don’t affect the evening sun,id love to go at the evening but because it’s a building site I dont think I can go on site after 5pm.

Thanks again for your help guys

Your garden is much larger than mine but I love our NW garden, it's much better than the south facing one we use to have. Our patio is in the shade pretty much all day but I love that. I can sit out there for lunch on hot days without baking and then it has the sun in the evening which is pleasant for dinner.

The only downside for us is that during winter we only get sun at the very back of the garden so it's no good for hanging the washing out on milder days.
