We've got some lovely 50s teak parquet flooring, which I'd like to restore.
Everywhere except the edges, the varnish has worn right off. This makes the wood look lighter and dull, but when I cleaned it with some Bonas Wood Floor Cleaner, the wood came up a beautiful reddish colour when wet with the cleaning product.
The wood is in reasonable condition, but with quite a lot of dark stains (possibly grease from dropped food since it's a dining room) and a few shallow scratches.
Using the wood cleaner did seem to get some of the stains up, so I'll have a few more goes with that, but I don't think it will get all the stains up, and I think I also need to do something about the remaining varnish before re-finishing.
What's the best approach?
Should I sand lightly to get the remaining varnish off? Will that shift the stains as we? I''ve got a small electric hand sander, or could do by hand. The parquet is about one cm thick.
Are there any other products I could try first to get the stains out?
A couple of the pieces are loose. Any recommendations for adhesive to fix it?
What' s the best finish for it once I'm happy with it? I like the natural colour of the wood (when wet with the wood cleaner). Would a clear matt varnish do it? (And how easy is it to apply that well?). I think something quite hard-wearing would be best, but don't want to make the wood look plasticky. Any suggestions?
And finally, there's a cork strip around the edge of the room, some of which has crumbled. Do I just lift it out and replace with something like this?
Many thanks!
