Load bearing wall without side/supporting columns - is this possible?

DH and I are house hunting at the moment (FTB) and almost all of the houses we've looked at have extensions. As a result, they have living areas which are divided into 2 or 3 parts because walls have been knocked through but the supporting piers/columns at the side remain. I've attached a picture so that it's clear what I'm talking about.

The problem is that it divides fairly large living areas into 2 or 3 sections and furnishing these rooms seems difficult. You'd have to place furniture either side of the column and then the room looks awkwardly divided.

If we bought a hosue like this, could we redo the structural beam/lintel so that the side columns are removed? Any options to give us uniform walls? Or, alternatively, does anyone have a living room like this and been able to make it work as a single, unified space?

We put the columns on the outside, but that of course requires the space

That could be a good option. One side of the wall is a shared wall (semi detached) but that could be possible on the other side. One uniform wall would be better than none!

You can also reduce the pillar if it’s not built on I beams or engineering bricks.
